PICKUP & PADDLE @ Cadron Creek - Hwy 65 *APRIL 30 *

Post by Wildwood » Sat Mar 26, 2011 4:10 pm

PICKUP & PADDLE AT CADRON CREEK SATURDAY, APRIL 9, 2011
(Rescheduled due to lack of water to float)

Fun!! Prizes!! First Swimmer Award!! Surfing Contest!! Secret Eddy Prize!!

Join in the fun RAIN OR SHINE as we beautify a mile of highway 65 and paddle through the rapids of Cadron Creek. We will pick up the trash along our adopted one mile of Highway 65 and then paddle the creek. We will be paddling from EITHER Mill Bridge or Pinnacle Springs Bridge to Highway 65, which is full of play spots. Depends on the water level. Or we could split into two groups. All you need to bring is your boat, your lunch, and a pair of gloves for touching the trash. Trash bags will be furnished and the Highway Department will collect the trash bags when we are through. Our fastest collection time so far has been twenty minutes, but count on a little less than an hour.

Meet at 10:00 A.M. in the parking lot under the north end of the Highway 65 bridge over Cadron Creek. The bridge is located about two miles north of Greenbrier on Highway 65. The road down to the parking lot is Ozark Drive and is located about three quarters of a mile north of the bridge; it is the same road you would take to get to the Ozark Trade Center, on the east side of the highway by the big blue sign. There are brown Cadron Creek Access signs on the highway shortly before Ozark Drive on both sides of the highway. Take Ozark Drive all the way down to the end to get to the parking lot.

Here’s a link to a Mapquest map with a star at the point where Ozark Drive is located (about 1400 Highway 65 N):

Big fun! Prizes! Surfing contest! First Swimmer Award! Secret Eddy prize!

We'll get the chore out of the way and romp on the river. The first person to come out of their boat will receive the coveted "First Swimmer Award". This award is gratefully given by the group for taking the pressure off of the rest of us. Another award will be handed to the best surfer at the traditional lunch spot wave (whether we eat there or someplace earlier in the romp). This tricky wave has vexed many paddlers lately and needs to be taught a lesson by some ace surfers. Back by popular demand is the "Secret Eddy" award, to be given to the first boater to catch the special eddy selected. Nobody knows which eddy has been selected, but you can be sure it will be a difficult one that requires superior skill and unequalled bravery.

It's likely we will go to Joe's Pizza (or take a vote on somewhere else) after the Pickup & Paddle.

Come one! Come all!
Bring gloves!
10:00 a.m. at the Highway 65 bridge.
Be there! Be there!

"Someone" said there's not enough water, so this is now set for April 30th. Let's hope for rain . . .
See you under the bridge.

Hey Mr. Ellwood,
I have an extra sit on top kayak, paddle, and PFD. I have used it for the Cadron many times and it is great! I live in Conway, and you are more that welcome to use it for the day. My wife and I plan on attending this event as well, so if you need it just give me a call. 501-nine 08-5eight eight Nine. 8)

Thanks to Toad Suck Days, my shop will be closed on saturday, and I will be able to make it after all. A boat is arranged, and it looks good. Hope to see everyone on the river.

Everyone keep your eyes open for a wrapped sit-on-top.

If can be salvaged, we know how to contact the owner. If it can't, it is still litter that needs to be removed...

Sorry, but due to unforeseen circumstances, I cannot make this one. Everyone have fun, and Cowper is serious about the wrapped sit on top, I got the email address of it's owner, if it can be recovered without endangering anyone.
Have fun and be safe (and sane)

Hey, we got enough water to do the 10 mile Hwy 65 to 285 section with ease!

Whatever suits the majority suits me. I've never been on that section but I'm game. I may need your assistance on a couple of small things tomorrow. Like the "secret eddy" . . .

Seven of us did the 65 to 285 section yesterday, two in the group had never paddled WW before. While there were some tight spots, the creek was open.
The pathway on the right side of Rock of Gilbraltor seemed much narrower to me this time.
At about mile marker 8, where it turns left thru the trees and into "Lower In Your Face Bluff"... The clearest shot thru the wood line is now up at the beginning, or the first opening on the left. The old way thru use to be at the far left end of this pool. This was at 4.5 on the USGS gauge and 3.5 on the stick gauge, maybe it needs recalibrating. If you miss that first opening, loose your boat, some carnage may result and a rider may have to walk and crab down with ya 1/4 mile. :poke:

Chester,
Thanks so much for your help. I was kinda surprised to see my red XP10 coming down the creek all by itself. Overall, I think he did pretty well for his first time in a kayak, though. I'm looking forward to seeing your pics of the trip. I had a blast.
