Totally OT; mac HELP!!!

Post by Clif » Wed Apr 27, 2011 1:13 pm

Sorry... I know there are some mac users on here. I need help. My system at work got lightning zapped and fried. Lost 2 G4 s and a commercial printer... phones maybe more??

Problem; I need the classic. 2 of my main programs run in OS9. Can I put my version of OS10...pre 10.5... in to a newer machine? I have been knowing these G4s are on borrowed time but newer OS will not talk to my printers and cost me a grand or more to update software.

So I ebay an older g5 or see if I can find another way around. PM if you wanna call and talk about this.

thanks
Clif

I'd kinda doubt it, as the newer models all have hardware-specific software discs, but then again, you can install windows on the newer macs, so there may be some sort of work around. Do you still have an old OSX install disc?

yes... 10.2 i think..sumthin. We put in these machines like in 04 or 5. I read of a 3rd party program to run my program.. but that sounds shaky. And the review wan't that positive sounding.

I would spend the grand and make the jump to 10.6.
I spend that at least every other year- not counting hardware upgrades.
It's only gonna get worse the longer you put it off.
I put off the 9 to 10 move for years (about 5 years ago!), so I feel your pain.
Been through the lightning strike thing too.

Hi, I agree with the upgrading to OSX. Just update the files (if you can) and bite the bullet. If you want an older system, Shreve systems in Louisiana has been around since the late 80's and was pretty good last time I used them, years ago. Last year, I finally got rid of my big, old 40 Meg HD I bought in grad school. I have also started to throw out my 3.5" floppies. I guess my cd's will be next.

no way to phase into it and not enuff business to jump into system overhaul without some new areas of marketing. Clinton is not exactly a thriving area right now. Gas drilling is difficult industry with so much area covered. Thanks to a friend I have a temp solution I hope and will have to take steps to come up to age.

Still have equip that may be damaged.. no way to test it with no computers.
