Whitewater school still on?

Post by jsmarsch » Mon Apr 25, 2011 7:16 pm

I hear it's getting wet down there! Is the event still on, or will it be flooded out? (a little rain never hurt anyone, but I hear the Mulberry's over 10 feet now, and a bunch more rain is coming)

I bet if it gets called off, it'd be done on friday. The storms should end by wednesday and unless there is significant damage to turner bend, the school will go on. I betting that the river will drop out by friday so it should be good by the weekend. I'm hoping conditions will be excellent for canoe school!!!

Have to be optimistic and go with, it'll be great. We prolly won't need any more rain. Hopefully the river will drop out fast and be perfect. I looked back at the historical record on the Turner Bend page and looked at a couple of years with similar spikes. Drops out fast. Check it out:

I remember a few years back the river was around 15 feet early in the week prior to school. It did not rain much And by 6:AM Saturday morning the river was a pushy 4+ feet. It was one of the best schools I can remember.

The level will be 2.7 on Saturday morning and a brief evening shower will bump that up to 3.2 on Sunday. Trust me!

Hey, we got blown off in 2009 and I still had a blast and learned tons of stuff. Ditto again last year except it was too low instead of too high. Still we had an awesome class and learned tons of stuff. I'm not a student this year but I volunteered to guard the beer cooler, unless the 'tot is running. Either way, it will be a blast again! Two more work days!

It'll still be on. This has happened in the past and most of the beginning classes went to Shores Lake, with the more advanced classes going to other creeks. I can't remember it ever being cancelled.
Wait... What?

Below is historical information from Turner Bend after a similar rain event in 2004 showing how quickly the river level falls. If the current weather forecast holds there's a good chance that the weekend will be great for WW school.

Apr 24, 2004 at 19:44 - 10.4 Clear skies, river falling
Apr 25, 2004 at 07:58 - 7.7 Going down
Apr 26, 2004 at 08:02 - 5.5 Still no boating
Apr 27, 2004 at 07:52 - 4.4 Watch out for fallen trees
Apr 28, 2004 at 07:47 - 3.8 Great level for good paddlers
Apr 29, 2004 at 07:53 - 3.4 Light showers

What's the school's view of the appropriate upper limit above which we don't put people on (students like me)... just curious. About 3.6-3.8?

Jaytee,
We will have to make a call about the river on Saturday morning, however, there are multiple options. If the river is too high at Turner Bend, there is a possibility of moving upstream. If that is still too high, there is lots of work that can be done at the lake up at the top. We will find water that is appropriate for our classes!

Hope this helps,
Shep

4 feet at TB has been the traditional cutoff for clases on the river

Last year we were able to paddle around to where White Rock Creek comes into Shore's Lake and there was some good current there to work in. May have to do something like that on Saturday if the level doesn't drop adequately.

My personal cutoff is around 4.0... Just have to see what the conditions are that day, etc.

Stop doing your rain dancin' now! Save some for early June!

Im new guys and gals so if I screw this up cut me some slack. I was wondering if anyone goes up early to get in a little preschool practice. Water permittin I was hoping to get in a trip Thursday and for sure Friday. Don't have any idea about the camping. I assume tent camping stuff and pack lite. The camp appears to be split by the highway and I was wondering where to set up. Also since I will be there early I don't want to get anyone's "Spot". I hear it is really crowded and would appreciate any info from some of you that have been there done that. THANKS !!!
