PADDLING MISSISSIPPI CREEKS APRIL 15 - 19, NW ARK MAY 13-19

Post by Louiscov » Tue Apr 05, 2011 9:24 am

A group of Ozark Society/ACC members will be paddling streams in south central Mississippi near Hattiesburg April 15 - 19, precisely at Okatoma Outpost near Seminary, MS. We'll be base camping with Okatoma Outpost in the shade right on Okatoma Creek, padling a different stream each day and returning to base camp and hot showers each night. A very family friendly trip.

The streams are twisting small streams with clear water and sandy bottoms. The Okatoma is more similar to the Caddo in Arkansas including shoals and some drops. This was a wonderful trip last year and we all wanted to do it again.

We'll definitely paddle Okatoma Creek and Black Creek (Black was last year''s favorite), and choose others from among Magees Creek, Strong River, Red Creek. Last year we enjoyed all of them and they were all pretty and remote. Hers's some links:

We're doing a similar trip to NW Arkansas, SW Missouri May 13 - 19. Base camping with daily drives to streams:

Fri - Sun May 13 - 15 paddling Big Sugar Creek and Elk River in SW Missouri.

Mon - Thur May 16 - 19 paddling the Buffalo as far up as we can go, probably road trips to Kings River and War Eagle, camping near Ponca/Jasper

Also Sun - Thur Oct 16 - 20 in SE Missouri for Eleven Point, Current, Jacks Fork Rivers at Eminence Missouri.

Spent many a day on the Okatoma back when I lived in the Magnolia State!

Nothing compares with the Buffalo. Here are pictures from my trip to Black Creek in March.

I had planned to camp on the river and took everything with me to do that but the forecast for the next morning was for rain and I decided to camp at the Janice campground instead. I slept on my cot without a tent. See the last picture. The next morning as soon as I had everything loaded and ready to leave it started to rain. All worked out very well.

Fantastic photos/clips Richard. THANKS!!!

You betcha nothing compares to the Buffalo!!! May will be the 30th anniversary of my first trip to the Buffalo in 1981. (I've got the exact date somewhere) & will give a special morning prayer of thanks for the blessing of knowing and loving the Buffalo. Back then Kyle's was a wild campground, no picnic tables, porta-toilets, wild, noisy, unsupervised, tents piled in every 10 ft: and I loved it!!! On the other hand, kudos to the park guys for upgrading it to a family place. There no Erbie campground, wrecking rock hadn't disappeared. I've been lucky to nearly always be on the Buffalo weekdays and it still has the same haunting, awefilled beauty and peace. Been up there 27 of these 30 years. Some us NW Louisiana paddlers will be there May 15 - 19. It be super to have you join us.
