16' canoe strongback w/forms,plans,stems,strips,etc $300

Post by neighth4n » Mon Feb 07, 2011 1:45 am

i'll be selling or trading my strongback and forms for a 16' canoe in 2 weeks when i remove the boat off the mold. i've attached a photo. i'm interested in a playboat but will consider all trades and offers. i have been working on this boat for months and have a lot of supplies, tools, various clamps, books, plans etc. that might beneficial in getting started on this project. i am using a stapleless construction method by having attached cleats to the mold forms for the strips to be clamped to. this makes for a hull that is completely free of marks. hundreds of hours went into the measurements, shaping, and construction of this mold. i would love to build a few more boats on this mold with some different woods but i'm moving soon and transportation is an issue. i have also milled down quite a bit of clear vertical grain western red cedar (special order from california), brazilian mahogany (now extinct), and african mahogany 1/4" cove and bead strips and ash strips for the inner and outer stems that i might consider letting go. please contact me with any questions. 314-4eight0-21four8. Thanks.

nah man. it's not finished. it's still on the forms. stripping should be done by the weekend. then i'll pull it off the forms after sanding and fiberglass which should take a few days. i'll post some newer pics in the next couple days. this one was taken well before christmas.

Nate,
From the picture and your narrative I know you have done a group of work over time. After all the work and materials to learn to repair my first (homemade) boat made of Kevlar, I'm sorry it's not convenient for you to take your jig and materials to your new residence and continue the hobby. The wood stock you mentioned is all very nice but your jig shows a lot of care and time in it's construction :)

Best Regards
Jim Moose

thanks so much jim for your comments. it's really cool to know that you appreciate and can relate to the work that went into the mold. i'll be working on some different designs and methods of boatbuilding once i get a shop set up after the move. a kayak with some steambent ash or white oak ribs wrapped in kevlar is definately on the list. superlight. man i'd love to see a photo of your boat if you get a chance. thanks again.

I looks like it will be a very nice canoe. I hope to see some photos when you get it out on the water.

Wow! It's looking awesome, nate! I know you can't wait til it's done and you're out on the water with it.

I made my own wood canoe very similar a few years ago and have made 3 others for people since. I used similar methods to make a wooden surfboard I just completed as well. You may want to try that project when you get moved.

Can I ask what book or plans you went by to build your forms?
I used Gil Gilpatrick's book, but want to try plans from "Canoe Craft" book.
