Re: Kyle's landing new parking
I found the original post confusing, and still not sure I get it. Not complaining, just trying to figure it out. Typically we arrive at Ponca, hire a shuttle expect to find our car parked somewhere at Kyles. I'm assuming that's the same.
After trip, we lug the raft up the ramp get ready to load, find the car drive, over, load and move off. Not practical for us to carry the boat 50 yards from the top of ramp. If there's a space we can slide in and do that, no problem. It's not unlike western river trips with a ranger barking at you to get off the ramp.
If there were a take out farther down and serviced by commerical shuttles, I'd be happy to take out there and avoid the climp up the ramp.

Re: Kyle's landing new parking
ROB, yes ,that is the same ... and yes you will have to lug your boat farther up the walk behind the wood rail.. and unlike western river ramps with rangers barking. these rangers will just issue you a ticket for being in the outfitters area! the permit for parking is for outfitters only! this gives them the right to use up (all )the space in the landing take out area.all but 2 parking spots => and the 2 spots for you to load or unload are next to the bathroom and trash cans  instead of waiting on some guy with a raft getting a TICKET. for loading his boat in the wrong space. i posted this to give (you) the private boater a heads up about this NEW THING HAPPENING... because i hate surprises. (that cost me hard earned cash). and I'm sure everyone else will also. so when the signs go in ,(you) the private boater, will already understand it's not a cruel joke. and will not park to load or unload in the wrong place! hope it's clear ! if your in the way of outfitters you will be asked to move( right now! not in 3 minutes or when you get done) . and a ranger will issue you a ticket! for parking ,or loading, or unloading in a premitted parking area.
Re: Kyle's landing new parking
Way to get a jump on things! Don't we usually wait until someone actually gets a ticket before the whining starts? Our group was on the Buffalo a couple of weeks ago and had an encounter with a ranger. He was friendly and offered us maps of both the river and area trails. I'm just sayin'.....

I agree with Greg! Over the past 20 years the Buffalo has become like paddling a large drainage ditch. Thank you to the folks that keep cutting the wood out so that the tourist will not need to know how to paddle a boat!

Re: Kyle's landing new parking
tears of joy? or did he see that pile of beer cans from the weekend?
Re: Kyle's landing new parking
I could rant all day on this, but lets just say the new kayaking ranger has got to be a major improvement over one we saw on the river 2 yrs. ago. As we watched him swim in a class 1 shoal, he got back in his boat soaking wet, as he paddles past us he asks "is everything ok over there" with this stern look on his face. We all busted out laughing. Where they crossed the line is when they started hiding on bluffs and vidio taped thier bosses(us) to bust them at the takeout. There are exceptions, but for the most part they are law enforcement who care nothing about the BNR.

Re: Kyle's landing new parking
What I heard was that if the Shutdown happens ALL National WR's and Parks would be closed. Wardens/Rangers will still be on duty to enforce the closures.
Buddy of mine has a permit to hunt Pond Creek NWR this weekend and he got a call telling him that if the shutdown happens he won't be able to use it. They did give him a number to call Fri. night to confirm though.
Just what I heard.

Remember all those gates that are on the Buffalo access roads at some point? Going to be locked. Roads with no gates? Temporary barricades. Tickets will be issued to violators.
At least that is what I am hearing.

Re: Kyle's landing new parking
If there are Rangers on duty, then why is parked closed? It takes as many Rangers to patrol and issue tickets to thier bosses(us), as it does to let people on the river. The real problem is trash pickup. Enforcement should stay home, not maintenance.

Re: Kyle's landing new parking
Thanks Bob for the heads up.
I'm wondering how many of us took the time out to go to one of the public comment meetings when the BNR was putting together their long range plans, or sent an e-mail. (I went to three of the meetings, wrote comments on the flip charts at all three, and sent an e-mail with formal written comments.)
Having attended those meetings, I can tell you that if you didn't know better, you would think horseback riders were the primary users of the BNR. They were there in force, and it seemed like 50% of the total comments were from folks wanting better services and more access to pursue - not canoeing, not camping (at least not in tents), not hiking - but horseback riding. (I'm tipping my hat to the horse clubs for having their act together.)
This is WHY I’m now a “clubber”. I hated clubs in high school and college, only joined the ones I had to join because some teacher said so. But now I’m recognizing that organized groups can accomplish things which no individual can make happen, and I’ve realized that when you do choose to comment on some public issue, nobody is “grading” your essay to see how effectively you argue your point. They are simply reading long enough to put it in a neat box – “FOR” or “AGAINST” something. So you don’t have to spend hours fine tuning your arguments – just say SOMETHING and try to get your friends (or fellow club members) to send in an e-mail too.
If this stuff really pisses you off, please try to capture some of that energy and use it the next time someone is on this message board begging others to send in public comments or go attend some boring public meeting. Or use it right now and write an e-mail to the NPS expressing your concerns - many of us can carry a boat 100 feet further, but some private boaters have different needs. What about single parents; what about those with heavy rafts, and so on?
I'm really thankful to still have access at all; at least they haven't put a private use permit system in place (yet).
Please try not to vent your anger at those who work in the parks, they didn't make the rules, and they didn’t want this shutdown either. Go to this thread if you want to see why some in power think they must “close” the park if they can’t patrol it adequately. http://forums.arkansascanoeclub.com/vie ... =1&t=18265" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
