Richland Snowmelt Saturday

Yeah this thing was a huge anomaly in the face of most meteorologists. A local station did some core samples and found that the moisture content of the snow was much higher than initially believed, more like in the 11 to 13:1 range. Thus there is more like an inch and a half or more laying around.

I think Sunday and/or Monday will be the ticket because the gradual warming and cold night time temps like Cowper mentioned.

8in of packed snow with a frozen crust, sunny, 39 degrees at 10:30 am. Should run tommorrow. dale

25 degrees and 25in airspace ar 8:30 am. If it goes today, it will have to warm up a lot, and real quickly, possible late this pm, more likely Mon. dale

Dale and Lazer both think it won't happen today, or that if it does it will be a bare-bones bump-down minimum float. They were in the area yesterday and report that much of the snow seemed to be sublimating instead of melting; also, it was a very dry snow and not as moisture-laden as we'd like to see.

Myself and Billy Williams are on "standby", working, but watching the gage.

Right now it is headed down. If it hooks and turns back up, we might go and scrape down because it is too nice a day not to.

I'm taking an older boat instead of my new Jackson, if that tells you anything.

UPDATE: Wishful thinking didn't pay off; the guru's called it. Gage is still "flatline" at 2.63 on the 11:30 update. Is it possible? I still say "yeah, it would be a good day on the creek", BUT, with so few going, nobody to split fuel with, can keep working and save my vacation hours, I need to wash my hair (how did THAT excuse slip in here???) I think we're going to fold and come back another day.

I am looking through articles right now because I am kind of curious about infiltration rates and the associated soil saturation of snowmelt. I would think, without reading any of the literature, that gradual snowmelt over the course of a few days would significantly increase the moisture content of soil. Seeing as it is slower and allows for more infiltration.

We should be in a good position for any rains in the next few weeks, dormant vegetation and hopefully super saturated soil will bump up the runoff of any upcoming rain events.
