South Fork of Little Red

Post by arfish » Wed Feb 02, 2011 12:22 pm

I am looking for some information on the South Fork of the Little Red River. I am from Fayetteville, so this is a little too far for me to drive and scout out, and would like to have a plan when I go this spring. I will be canoeing, and want to avoid big WW. What are some good access points for a day trip, or maybe an overnighter, where we could do a little fishing and nature watching? Is there an access point in Clinton, if so where? Looking at Google Maps, it looks like there may be an access at Shake Rag Rd, anyone familiar with this? I would also consider the Middle Fork, if it is a better destination.
Thanks for your help.

The whitewater sections are above the Hwy 95 crossing west of Clinton. The section between Hwy 95 and Hwy 65 has flatland characteristics but there will be swift water going through trees at higher water levels. You will not be able to camp in this section because it runs through private property.

There is river access at Hwy 65 in Clinton. If traveling north on Hwy 65, cross the 65 bridge over SFLR and turn right on East North Street which will curve back around and take you under the bridge where you can put in. A few miles downstream, SFLR enters Greers Ferry Lake. I have not done this section but I know that there are islands where you could camp. I do not know anything about take outs for this section but looking at the maps, there appear to be several possibilities. You will be on the lake part of the time. Hope this helps.

Archy Fork is very similar to the South Fork but has very limited access.

Thanks, that is very helpful. One other question that just came to mind, are there any low water bridges that we should be mindful of, and portage?

Again, thanks.

There is a low water bridge and a small dam on the Hwy 95 to Hwy 65 section. At normal water levels these can be portaged but can be hazardous at higher levels. There are also places on this section that are hazardous due to fallen trees. I am not aware of anything below Hwy 65.

Or can be good surfing, depending on your point of view.
