New Level Gages - What's Your Wish List?

Post by Cowper » Tue Feb 01, 2011 10:16 pm

DeBo has already made an initial contact with ANRC (Arkansas Natural Resources Commission) to explore the potential for some new level and water quality gauging stations in Arkansas. Soon, she'll be sending a letter that gets down to specific recommendations.

Based on past feedback from various sources, we believe that the top priorities should be Lee Creek and Salado. Lee lacks a meaningful gauge (the existing one is too far downstream of the popular floating stretches), and Salado has no gauge at all. Lee is one of the more popular runs in that part of the state. Salado is less well known, but appears to be well thought of by those who have run it, and is in a part of the state with generally fewer floating opportunities. With real-time water level information, it would likely rival Cadron Creek in popularity. (In other words, these two gauges would benefit a wide spectrum of paddlers.)

I should also mention to you that the reason Arkansas is adding gauges while many other states are losing gauges, is because of the oil and gas drilling. This activity has created a need for additional monitoring of water quality; the level data recorded is just part of the package. For that reason, proposals for gauges that are in areas having active oil and gas exploration are the most likely to receive the necessary funding.

So, what's your wish list?

Middle fork of the White. Hazel valley run or bridge to bridge section, or both.

Agree that Lee Cr. is #1.
EFLB is probably the most popular steep creek area without a gauge: #2

Other than that, on the "never gonna happen, but sure would be nice" list: Osage, Little Mill, and Crooked Cr. Osage and Little Mill do have some extremely friendly landowners to work with though. My pick would be Osage - no gauge near it or downstream at all.

I agree with Lee Creek it would be nice to have a gauge that actually showed what the run was doing (not what 30+ miles of river was doing), and with any luck we could also come up with some better correlations for the other creeks in the area too (Fall, Blackburn, Ellis, and the illusive Hart and Ben Doodle).

Beech and EFLB would be pretty sweet too. With the Google Earth stuff Fish and those guys did you are able to pretty accurately guestimate, but any other tools in the arsenal would be awesome.

EDIT: A gauge on Osage would be money.
