dixon ford road

Post by whudson » Sat Dec 18, 2010 8:09 pm

Does anyone know the road conditions between dixon ford and Cave mtn. road. This is in the upper Buffalo Wilderness starting at the hailstone put-in and continuing up to Cave Mtn. I have seen it referred to a the Kapark road. Can I safely drive that road in a 2wd short bed truck with 16" tires? I realize that the road conditions are relatively dry now, but will probably change this winter. At least I hope the weather will finally turn wet.

It just happens that I have a 2wd pickup with 16" wheels and a short bed. And I have driven down from cave mountain to the hailstone put in. The road is actually pretty good, at least it was last fall. There are some mud holes, but if you are prudent, it shouldn't slow you down. I actually had a more scary incident on the highway 21 side, I was just barely creeping around one of the steep switchbacks going downhill and the back end just came around on me in that greasy mud. I was going slower than walking speed so the abs is useless. I almost slid off the road. Me and my buddy just looked at each other and we both put our seatbelts on. Spent the night down there and left before the sun came up so the mud was all frozen and went back out no problem. The cave mountain side of the creek is a popular destination for hunters, you will see big RV's over there, they just don't go down the big hill.

I'm out at dixon ford/ kapark road a lot to hike the Upper Buffalo. I wouldn't recommend driving on the North side (Kapark Road/Cemetary) unless you have a 2wd vehicle with high clearance. If you are going North to Cave Mountain Road it would be wise to have some wieght in the back. I have seen people go up and down that road in vehicles that were not 4wd. I don't know if I would do it unless I absolutely had to or didn't care about possibly high centering. Where are you trying to get to out there?
