Roof rack mounts
I'm looking at a vehicle with no factory rails, can anyone give me a strong feeling for installing rails for a base system versus the Q towers Yakima makes? I'm looking at Yakima since I already have a number of their products.
I'd like any feedback about the stability of the Q towers.
If it matters the vehicle is a Honda CRV.
Thanks for any info.

Re: Roof rack mounts
I used the Qs on a Sierra crew cab for several years and was very pleased. I used to put an Old Town Discovery 158 up there along with other goodies and always felt secure about it. I no longer have the rack, the canoe, or the Sierra, but of the three I have the fondest memories of the rack. Long story. Anywho, I highly recommend the system with one caveat. Don't even bring it home without a fairing unless you enjoy thinking there's a helicopter on the roof of your ride.

Oh yeah, one more thing. You'll appreciate the fact that the Q Towers have a minimal impact on the roof of your car, which is nice when swapping time comes around. Also, get the locking cores in case someone decides they need the rack worse than you do. That is all.

Re: Roof rack mounts
used the Q towers for many years on a number of cars and one extended cab pickup. as mentioned before, roof noise was big time on the truck.
no problems, except I recommend the use of bow and stern tie downs just in case. Mine racks moved a bit several times on top of the car (big time overload my fault) but never came off. Hence, the bow and stern tie downs just in case.
the good thing is once you buy the towers you can just buy the clamps when a new vehicle comes along.

Fortunately, at least in my case, the fairing eliminated most of the wind noise. It would howl inside the canoe if I didn't get it positioned just right though.

Re: Roof rack mounts
Good information all the way around, especially on the bow/stern tie downs. I've gotten somewhat lax on that with our other toter (that has rails), better safe than sorry.
Felt sure there would be some good feedback from this group about high volume usage, and I wasn't disappointed.
Thanks again.

Anthony, this is tough to admit, but I would agree. As you might have guessed my school colors were not green...

Yup, it is easy to just not mess with bow and stern tie downs, specially when you have a bomber truck bed rack setup.
Then you get in a hurry and something goes bad and!!!
I went for years zero problems, then heading back up to the putin from big piney take out, one of my kayaks slid out of the middle of the pile on one of those super steep bank turns and somehow my kayak found it's way all the way down to the bottom.
no problems other than briar scratches to my bare legs but it scares me to think what could have happened it it had shot directly into the windshield of a oncoming vehicle
could have been worse.
