CPR Info for ACA Instructors

Post by Mike B » Fri Nov 26, 2010 4:08 pm

Below is some info on CPR for ACA certified instructors.

These classes are being offered by the American Red Cross Little Rock. I plan on taking the CPR for Professional Rescuers on 12-7-10.

CPR / AED for the Professional Rescuer
12-07-10
9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (8 hours)
$62.00
Little Rock, AR

* This is the CPR class, or a similar one, you really need to take as an ACA instructor. It covers rescue breathing and other skills that would be essential in a wilderness type environment.

CPR / AED Adult
12-3-10, 12-9-10, 12-17-10
9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. (4 hours)
$32.00
Little Rock, AR

* This class will probably meet the ACA requirements but will not include all of the skills you are likely to need in a true wilderness environment.

The American Red Cross also offers Standard First Aid with CPR/AED (7 hours, 30 minutes, $47.00). This class may meet the ACA’s requirements depending on your teaching environment but will not cover rescue breathing or adequate First Aid for wilderness environments.

Example: It may be suitable if you instruct at a pool or city environment such as Rockport where 911 services are quickly available.

Thanks for the info, Mike.

ACC instructors still have until Dec. 31 to take First Aid and or CPR and be eligible for up to a $25 rebate from the Central Chapter. E-mail me (NOT PM) for more information.

Liz and Mike,

Several of us here in the Tulsa area just took the local Tulsa Red Cross Chapter two day Wilderness Responder and First Aid course. You might ask your local Red Cross Chapter if they plan to offer this course as it had an official Red Cross illustrated booklet which was very good.

I think this was their first time. My personal assessment of the course they put on is that it is worthwhile. But, I would like to have seen a lot more drills than we did. Most of our clinic was lecture oriented. The gentleman was very active in the medical field and was on staff as a volunteer at Philmont Scout Ranch and had a ton of interesting stories to tell about incidents there. His help did not show and that might have been why we did fewer drills.

Many years ago, Kim put on a Wilderness First Responder course at Couchdale that lasted from Friday evening till Sunday afternoon. Not sure of who did the deal but my recollection is some outfit from New England area that specializes in wilderness medical training. I know the young man who taught us was first class, made his living as a EMT and was on several search and rescue units in North Carolina.

This course was heavy on drills and was more along the lines most of us rafters and river runners will encounter.

Would love to see this same deal put on at Couchdale every year or so.

5 or 6 years ago the ACC brought in an instructor from SOLO Wilderness Medicine to teach Wilderness First Aid at Couchdale. On Friday night we certified on CPR, and on Saturday and Sunday we went through a combination of class room instruction and practical exercises on first aid. The woman who ran the course came in from North Carolina.

SOLO, WMA, and WMI of NOLS are all good outfits, but we also happen to have a Wilderness First Aid/ First Responder instructor who is a member of the club. I don't know if there is an issue with conflict of interest or something, but I would hope Tom B. is available at some point. Plus I think his simulation patients are first-rate!

Hi Folks,

Due to the level of interest, we will be holding at least one Wilderness First Aid class in January and if there are more than 16 participants, we will do a second weekend as well.

My company, Ozark Safety and Rescue Educators, offers Wilderness Medical Society (the national standard) compliant courses in wilderness medicine from Basic through Advanced levels. We have a specific format that we term "Wilderness First Aid for paddlers" that is a weekend class specific to the needs of paddlesports.

This course blends lots of hands on practice and scenarios that reinforces what we learn in the classroom portion, resulting in a fun and challenging weekend.

I'll be starting a thread with more details in the next couple of days, once we confirm a site.

Cheers,

Tom

Man, Tom, sure wish we would have known your dates. Four of us DustBowlers just did the Red Cross deal as we thought we were running out of time.
