Felsenthal Camping Trip 11/27 & 28

Post by DeBo » Wed Nov 17, 2010 11:04 am

For all of you who want to escape the post Thanksgiving pre-Christmas shopping maddness we are planning an overnight experience in the Felsenthal Refuge saturday november 27th.

Felsenthal has a water accessable only camp site which we can reserve for Saturday night. We will meet at the Refuge HQ at 11:00am, paddle to camp and paddle out on Sunday.

UPDATE 11/26: See later post in thread for new details.

All of the logistics have not been worked out yet but I wanted to get this post up so that we can begin planning. I am thinking that we could do a potluck Saturday night. I will bring a pot of chicken gumbo and others could bring some side dishes. Let me know if you are coming.

Minna, are you sleeping in a tent? Is it big enough for 2? I don't have one. Have a light weight sleeping bag only.

Yes, Little Maumell possibly. Who else may be going? I may camp at Felsenthal but if it is going to be bitterly cold, probably not. Gary said if I go to Felsenthal, he would come camp out with Rick. :D

I am hoping to make this one but if I can't I can send camping stuff with Debo. Just let me know what you need.

I am assuming everyone is responsible for transporting their own gear to the camp site.

I looked ahead at the weather channel and the lows will be low and mid 30's next weekend. I probably won't go if that cold. Am I a wimp or what. :chicken:

Weather forecasts are not reliable more than three days out.

This is very true! Also, if it is cold, just adding a fleece liner; bought cheap at WalMart, adds exponentially to the warmth of a marginal sleeping bag. Add a couple of chemical hand warmers to the foot of the bag and you are all set! :D I plan to bring extra ones.

Day time temps are projected to be mid sixties. If that is true all will be fine.

PS Yes, Richard, everyone is responsible for their own camping gear, but I wouldn't be unhappy if someone wanted to bring a larger camp stove than my little one burner. It could be considered a contribution to the potluck.

Debo, I am hoping to make this one, but if I can not, I can still send a two burner coleman propane stove or one of my one burners.

That's right! I've got too much of my own chit to carrying other people's chit. And don't you be loaning no chit to DeBo either, 'cause I might end up carrying it! :poke:

DeBo and I did a scouting run to Felthensal yesterday - if the weather cooperates, it is going to be quite the trip. Persons without GPS would be well advised to stay within sight of the group. It's a big area, and the best channel to follow is not always obvious. Some day, there will be a network of marked water trails. Go now, so that someday, you can say "I remember when..."

Each time I watch Buffalo Flows, I get to watch Cowper paddle my chuff in his canoe. .

Put In (and Take Out) Pine Island Boat ramp N33.0867 W92.0955

Official Designated Campsite at Henderson Bend
N33.09925 W92.14425

Alternate Camp if first is occupied (about 1000 feet away)
N33.10155 W92.14260

Note, we've mapped out a route that will allow us to paddle a "loop". The only area we will see twice is the 0.6 mile boat lane from the ramp out to the main body of water.
