Buffalo at Woolum. Is the River there right now?

Post by Cool River Runnings » Thu Oct 21, 2010 6:20 pm

Planning a fishing trip next weekend. At this low level is the river gone for the first few miles below Woolum right now? Really wanting to do this section but not if there is no water. By no water I mean the pools are gone. Don't care if we have to drag all the shoals. Been reading the Buffalo Handbook and just curious how low it has to get before the water starts going underground. Can you get a visual from the road going into Woolum that follows the river? Planning a low water trip because I know it will never rain again.

I don't have an eye-witness report, but knowing how dry it has been I would be really surprised if the river hasn't gone underground for the first few miles below Woolum. Call the NPS, they’ll know for sure. Or if you just want to see for yourself, drive to Woolum, then go as far downstream as you can via the campground road. You’ll get to the end of the pool, to the place where the river first dives underground. It will be immediately obvious whether or not the river is flowing.

i wanted to do this section week before last and buffalo river outfitters in silver hill advised that the river had gone underground for a couple miles. i don't think there has been enough rain to change that. i did gilbert to maumee and it was bony.
