Need your input, please, on conversion project

Post by Wildwood » Wed Aug 04, 2010 10:24 pm

Last week I bought this '82 Chevy bread truck, in hopes of converting it to a "Yak Mobile." I would like to be able to haul a couple of kayaks in it, whatever I need for a float trip, and have room for a place to sleep in a pinch. It has shelves in it that could be partially removed to make room for kayaks. Maybe some more could be put on top. I am open to ideas . . . what would you do to make it a great boat hauler/camper?
Thanks.

Jan

Make it a 4x4! :D Way to costly I know, but a fun thought to entertain.

Since it's not a 4x4, Crane suggested a winch. (I drive a Jeep, so have a 4x4, but have not needed 4-wheel drive at any of the floats I've done this year.) The van is an automatic.

No, Jan, I suggested a rack on top! While I drive a 4X4, I rarely have found it necessary where I've been to paddle... I have wished I had more room on top, however, to load lots and lots of boats for a shuttle!! Crane

Thanks, guys. PaddleDog is gonna send pics of his yakmobile.

Has anyone used a guy near Overcup who does conversion work?

I'd give it a sweet paint job. Somehow incorporating paddling into the design. This being another completely unnecessary upgrade suggestion, but another fun thought to entertain nonetheless.

If you take Dave up on his suggestion, the best "Paddling Painter" in the ACC is Jason Mellor... He's done some wicked stuff on shuttle vehicles in the past! crane

I was thinking about somehow painting the bread truck, the '85 Toyota Landcruiser, and my Jeep in a kayak related theme. The guy who does my tattoos has been known to airbrush some pretty wild scenes.

Thanks for your ideas.

Jan,
You have to incorporate the "rose colored" glasses somewhere in the design, along with your tat.... :D

Hmmm, the River Rat tat or the wave/paddle one? I stole the River Rat idea from Donna's avatar of a beaver in a yak. I now have it on T-shirts, a coffee mug and postage stamps. I guess I must like it!

Use both! Sounds like you are doing great. Zach and I enjoyed our float and hope to see you around.
