SW AR, NE TX Floating

Post by daxhaltom » Tue Sep 14, 2010 7:56 pm

Does anyone have any information on floating the Sulfer River below Lake Wright Patman? Suggestions on dam release, water levels, distance, basically anything. Also, I posted to see if anyone floats the red river. Has anyone done the Hwy. 71 to Fulton or Fulton to Garland City? I need to get my boat in the water down here somewhere. I would like to tackle one of these Sunday. Preferably camping Sunday night and finishing up Monday morning. Would love suggestions and company if anyone is down.

dax,

Sulfur = flat flat and more flat, oh and did i mention flat??? there is no sceduled release, it is strictly flood control.

if you put in on the red at 71 there is a river wide ledge probly drops 1.5 /2ft about .5 miles from the bridge, I have not seen this at higher water so it probly washes out. oh and did I mention flat? hate that stuff.

only other optoin would be the lower mountain fork u could make it into a over night float and if you do it suring the week u may actully have water.
small rapids, flat, shoals and, and more flat, Hope u like to paddle

Thanks Heath, I do love to paddle and that is the problem with just moving down here. lol. I will check out the Lower Mountain Fork. I guess I will just have to suck it up and try to float on a day there is no wind.

The Lower Mountain Fork hasn't been running for several weeks now. Broken Bow lake is over 10 ft. low so, therefore, the only generation has been a minimal amount just to control the water temp for the trout. As long as SWPA's other projects are able to produce enough electricity to maintain the demand on the grid, the LMF won't run until substantial rain fills the lake.

For a weekday day run, your only sure thing would be the Little Missouri River below Lake Greason Murfreesboro, AR. They almost never generate there on weekends. Although, as of Labor Day, that lake was nearing the bottom of its power pool level. So, get it sooner rather than later before it is shut down too.

Dax,

Have floated both the Sulphur and the Red in the Texarkana area. The Sulphur is certainly flat water but at 13000 cfs release it was a good float. Damsite to Highway 237. The Red is, as one of the other fellows said, a flat water stream also. Catch it at 7000 or better with a wind out of the northwest and she is a good float. 903-280-3375 is the number. Chuck is the name. BTW, I do the Red fairly often. Moving white water, try the Little Mo, the Caddo, Mountain Fork (especially above the lake), or the Kiamichi. Also, toss in the Glover when she has water. Or if you are really into flat water with a twist head to Manitoba some summer when I take a group up there. Great scenery, great fishing and you can't beat Molsom.
