Hometown Throwdown #2

Thanks to O.O.O. Monster, Mohawk, (am I missing anyone?) My very first Hometown Throwdown as a darn good time. I was just minding my own business heading to Rockport today with the dog for a little surf time and low and behold I wound up stumbling on the Throwdown and being shamed into entering. I did pretty lousy but I think I would have been more respectable had their been a Senior Division.

Had a great time at Throwdown! Getting jacked up on Monster and paddling go great together, not to mention the eventual comedown It's been great getting to reconnect with you folks I haven't seen in a while and hang out with those i'm just now getting to know as well as meet some new faces. This HTTD must have been at least twice as big as the first and it was the more the merrier even if did make it a challenge to find a place to put-in. I think that was the most boats I've ever seen at Rockport. Here's to Hometown Throwdown #3 May it be even bigger and better!

Kudos to Jeremy for organizing such a great event! Promoting paddling, not only at ORWP/Rockport, but all through the region. What an awesome time! Thanks too for the jammin' tune selections. Well, all of them but 'Ice Ice Baby'. hehe(: I'm looking forward to the Hometown Throwdown #3!

As Liz announced on another post, we did have another long. and rewarding IDW/ICE this weekend. On Saturday, while the Throwdown was going on, and we were working over on the other side of the river, I was so pleased to hear the very nice announcement you made to the crowd about who we were, and what we were doing. Thank you very much! I know it gave the instructor candidates a boost!
As always, I also appreciate how paddlers at large give groups in training, like ours, the space needed to work! Also, while everyone gave us plenty of space, it was also very meaningful to have folks like Gordon, Cowper and others cruise over for a minute just to offer a friendly smile or few words of encouragement!

What??!!?? That was my favorite one! I would've busted out the "running man dance" but I was at the spin hole on the other side of the river when it was playing

We sooooo tried to support your training efforts! In addition to actually donning my lifejacket to row my raft through the pool (set good examples….), with the assistance of an almost volunteer, we demonstrated

1) The advantages of “challenge by choice” (volunteer shoved unknowingly close to spin hole)
2) The advantages of aggressive paddling and bracing to remain upright when in hole
3) The disadvantages of leaning upstream even briefly
4) The advantages of wearing helmets
5) The disadvantages of not wearing elbow pads
6) The advantages of deep water re-entries…

Kudos to all who are giving their time to help others learn how to enjoy this sport more, and more safely!

Once again a great time ! Thank you Jeremy for the Monster drinks and the tunes...it was awesome to paddle with some good music going on!! felt like i was in a video!! :)
You guys left a big cardboard monster can so i got it at my house...if you need me to bring it down at surf and turf or the next throwdown just let me know..I had a great time and I really like seeing everyone!! I love the friendships i have formed at rockport. See you at Surf and Turf!!

Ah, yes Cowper...I was the "volunteer"....

I'm going to go on record here saying that it was all in the interest of entertaining the kayak instructor class. "Challenge by choice" is quite the phrase coming from Cowper...I know what to expect when he says "follow me" yet I do it anyway!!! And yes, in those brief moments, I gave a clinic on paddling and bracing in a hole, followed quickly by the disadvantage of leaning upstream, then followed by the disadvantage of raising your head while trying to roll, coupled by the disadvantage of not wearing elbow pads (ouch), then followed by the obligatory hazing in the form of the deep water re-entry move. I distinctly remember the phrase "no shore for you" being thrown out there as i struggled to pull myself back into the boat, along with a couple other remarks that I will refrain from repeating here on the board!!

For your viewing pleasure, I'm sure it will happen again in some form or fashion this coming weekend...
