Info on fixing kayak?

Post by Roxstar » Wed Jul 07, 2010 11:35 am

Styrofoam in the rear of my kayak has broken loose and is in need of repair. Anyone have any idea of an easy fix? Thanks in advance!

What kind of boat? Maybe you could use some micro cell foam and shape the foam to fit.

It's a Dagger...10.5 ft... Thank you for your response! It appears it was bolted down in some way, but the foam basically broke loose last weekend. Any idea where I can find this foam? Thanks, again!

Only an Idea..... Tear out Foam and buy a Air bag to put back in the rear, or get some epoxy to glue it back but i never tried it. I don't know if the epoxy would destroy the foam block??

Rox,

I have a 10.5 ft. Dagger Blackwater, if yours is like mine then the foam piece you are talking about is a 3" thick bulkhead that goes across the kayak, behind the seat and in front of the rear storage compartment. On my boat there is a metal bracket on each side of the bulkhead with a screw on either side of the boat that anchors these brackets. The bulkhead is made out of Gray Mini Cell foam and is made to fit snugly in the boat. The screws and brackets help position it correctly but is mostly held in with a couple of beads of silicone applied around the edge when installing it, and the inside and outside edges are sealed with a little more clear silicone when it's in place.
Is this somewhat like you are talking about? Not White Styrofoam?
If the foam is not too torn up or degraded in some way, you might be able to clean it up and re-glue&seal it. Regardless, you can get Mini Cell foam at outfitters like Ouachita Outdoor Outfitters in Hot Springs, or Ozark Outfitters
in L.R. and fashion a new piece using your old one for a pattern.

Best Regards
Jim

Great ideas, everyone. Thanks so much! The foam in mine is white...not like that described above. I reached out to Ozark Outdoor and they recommended a glue they carry. Unless it expands (which they said it wouldn't) I don't think it will work, though I know nothing of this fix, so I am probably wrong. I will check with them to see if the foam is available. Thanks, again!
