Water rescue on the Little Mo

Post by Tamara » Fri Jun 11, 2010 5:47 am

The Little Mo flooded Albert Pike campground last night. The Langley Fire Dept has called in other Fire Depts for assistance as far down as Caddo Valley. The orginal call stated that some campers had been washed into the river and that there were ppl hanging form trees. The river is dropping fast but it sounds like a mess up there. Hopefully everyone gets out ok.

Night rescues with moving water are bad stuff.

It's one thing to help with a rescue above something you can see, and know what downstream line you'd take if it goes bad. It's something else to hear the water rushing into the darkness, but you can't see the safe line, or even if there is one...

Little Mo USGS gage says it's running at like a squillion feet!! I'm guessing it got so high the gage got dorked. ????

I doubt the gauge is messed up. It was replaced about 2 years a go with some fancy looking gauge that sends some kind of signal from top of bridge. no longer has anything running the length of the bridge pillar.

Just heard 4 women, 2 men confirmed dead. So sad.

From article "Flooding on the Caddo River sent water into the Albert Pike Camp Ground just after three this morning."

That would be one hell of a flood for the Caddo to cause it but I think someone can't read the map.

This does sound tragic.

Man, now they are saying 10 dead. That water must have gone through that campground like a freight train. Look at the tabular gauge info and cfs quadrupled and then doubled every 15 minutes from 2 in the morning through 4am. Truly flash flooding.

I am assuming water ran through the Hopper Bridge on the Caddo, because the gauge quit reading at 5:45

It is truly a tragic day for many families. I know its hard to sit by and feel helpless in this kind of situation, especially being a kayaker. If you feel you must do something to help...pray....if you feel further need...Shelby Thompson, girlfriend of Jack Hollingsworth, work for the Red Cross and will need help setting up shelters for all of the wonderful Search and Rescue Teams and other volunteers. This is where you can help if you feel the need. She will be in a large white Red Cross Van and will definitely have work for you to do.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and families.

I'll repeat part of my post here to give you a sense of the speed at which things happened.

3:00 a.m. Gage Height 9.87 Flow 6,540
3:15 a.m. Gage Height 12.63 Flow 11,400

That's a 4,860 cfs rise in 15 minutes. Mercy!

12 confirmed dead now rivr is dropping fast and they are not sure how far the resuce boats can get down the river. I am on the way to see if I can help out in anyway. If it drops to a reasonable level with some other boaters I would be willing to paddle down and help look for hopefully surviors anyone else who wants to help is welcome. Call me if you think you might want to help. 501-627-3472 I will have service for about an hour and a half.

New Report: Red Cross will not be setting up shelters today, but will be serving meals, care packages, etc...As it turns out, a lot of people have volunteered and they have plenty of volunteers.....At this point it is sounding like it is a zoo down there and while many hands make light work, too many hands will make it difficult for these volunteers to be effective.
