OT: open office software?

Post by Clif » Wed Jun 09, 2010 7:43 am

Pardon my crowding out all the paddling threads with such a post..... :wink:

I have been using the openoffice.org software for some time to see word, spreadsheets, and powerpoint files. More and more things are changing to the new and improved "x" files. .docx .xlsx and such. My home pc or my mac @ work doesn't like these. I tried last night to update my open office and my security program stopped it claiming adware. I may have been on a not original site?? Gonna look again at that. I linked from a google search.

Any one else use the open office programs? any problems? How about on a mac?

I have no problem updating at work (the mac) where I use and need to the newer MS product, but @ home it is seldom used and more like convenience. Thoughts?

I was a long time user of Microsoft Office until I retired.

The cost of Microsoft Office on my home computer is why I switched to Open Office.

Been using Open Office for some ten years now and would not go back to Microsoft even if Microsoft Office was free.

Reason being Open Office can open and let you work on a bunch of different formats.

I get the Open Office updates automatically and so far have had zero problems with it. Right now I am on a Windows 7 desktop and things work pretty good. I am running avg free virus software, spybot free, superAntispyware free and so far no infections or problems doing updates to Open Office, Thunderbird or Fire Fox. Recently started using Hotmail and Yahoo Mail for email just to get off POP with my ISP which is Cox cable. Everything is working fine.

Vista was a pain for me, Windows 7 seems to work well.

I also have Ubuntu running on my desktop as a dual boot. Ubuntu and FireFox on my machine run faster than Explorer and Win 7.

Ubuntu is a free operating system and offers about the same choice of applications as Microsoft. Ubuntu is worth a try.

I go back and forth between the Win 7 and Ubuntu just in case I need a alternative to Win 7.

Here is the link in case anyone else might need it: http://www.openoffice.org" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Google Docs is a great free online office suite: http://www.docs.google.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; , I highly recommend it.

To battle Google Docs, Microsoft Office 2010 will be offered free online soon...
