Little Red

Post by Wildwood » Mon May 10, 2010 6:51 pm

Went to Lindsay's Resort today . . . now I've gotta float the Little Red. Where are the best put ins/take outs for it? Which part has the easiest shuttle? Thanks!

Jan,

Marlo and I have trailer-camped at Lindsey's on a couple of occasions, and the river does look good! One time I put our kayaks in there just so we could paddle upstream a few hundred yards to fish for trout in some of the deeper pools away from all the coon-tail moss that fills the river in many places. I know there are several of the Little Red sections floatable from JFK park to Pangburn, and beyond. Like the White River though, I think one must be mindful when on the Little Red that it's dam-released from above ,so on some occasions they could release a group of water. This is more important to be wary of nearer the dam, but also in the more constricted areas below.
Having said all this, the only float I've ever made was putting in at Cow Shoals access and taking out at the Swinging Bridge Access, about 5 miles or so, several years ago. Our trip was at low water conditions on a float at friends wedding/reception/float, very nice day, and a sedate float, followed by a really decent supper at Cafe Klasiers!!
There are several folks who live in the area or visit and float there more so I know you'll get more and better suggestions. P.S. I love Lindsey's Trout Resort to camp our trailer and fish, but it's just the pitts to put a kayak in the water due to the steep banks.

Best Regards
Jim

Wildwood, we live about four miles north of the Pangburn Shoals bridge. From Dripping Springs Access in Pangburn (about 1/4 mile above the bridge) to the Ramsey access on Highway 124 is a good float but without any real spots between to get out to stretch legs depending on levels. Shuttle is about 20-25 minutes both ways. Float is 7-8 miles estimated.

Winkley Shoals on Highway 110 to Pangburn to the Libby Access on Highway 337 is another good day float with a longer shuttle drive. Depending on levels, you can find the ocassional gravel bar.

Cow Shoals Access on Highway 210 (off of 110 before the bridge) to Winkley is a nice short float with little chance to get out. We did this one right after our wedding with about 15-20 boats in the wedding flotilla. A couple of hours after launch, we hit the take out.

Check with us ahead of your trips and if we are available, we would be glad to help with your shuttle or might even paddle if possible.

Jim & Roger,
Thanks for the info. I'll let you know when I plan to go there. Looks like it might be after rec school. Got too many other irons in the fire right now.

The Syllamo float is Saturday. Looks like a quick flat float. I'm staying over to fish on Sunday. The AR River race is the 5th, with rec school not far behind. Between those and my quick trips on North Cadron, I've got plenty of floating to do.

SYOTR

We floated from the dam to Lobo Landing in an afternoon (with the generators going). Great float. Nice and cool! :D

That sounds good. How many miles is it? I'm trying to paddle all I can before rec school. Last couple of trips to Greers Ferry Lake this week were stormed out.

Now that's a good question. John thinks it was 17 mi in 3 1/2 hrs. It was fast trip. I learned the lesson about staying away from boat docks..in time to get away from being swept under. eeks :hammer:
Here's a weblink to a float map (sans mileage).

In case you need to see some other maps, the AR site is:

This wk we floated on the White River with the generators going. It was nice and cool. Cotter to White Buffalo; next day White Buffalo to Norfork.

I am in the Rose Bud area and would be interested in a Red River float some weekend. (this one is out due to conflicts)
New to the area and trout fishing, so advice is welcome
