Hammocks

I've just gotten very tired of sleeping on the ground.

I've been comparing Hennessey Hammocks vs. Eagle's Nest.

I'll be using it mainly for island camping on Lake Ouachita and for backpacking trips. Any comments?

I love my Hennessy and it is so much more comfortable than a tent

Although, sometimes it is hard to find trees that have the right distance between them for it to work properly!

Finding a place to use a hammock is the big drawback as far as I am concerned. I like using a cot with a pad. Thats comfort. It is heavier and bulkier but so far that has not been a problem for sleeping on gravel bars.

I always carry a couple of spare trees with me, in case I can't find any to sling my hammock between.

Or, for super high-tech, ultra-light, use an old carbon fiber paddle shaft to do the same thing...

I've been hammocking for years and have never had anything brush against me in the night. Are you camping around dogs?

I am following this thread with interest.

I have a bunch of tents and bivy bags accumulated over the years
but
never had a hammock.

I read about the Hennessy units but a bit afraid of spending that much money for something I feel might not give me the back support that I get out of my Paco pad. Years of sleeping on those original 1/4 inch thin tan ensolite pads of the '60's took their toll.

So the big question, do the Hennessy units really work well for a over the hill boater around 220 pounds?

I'm no longer plugging hammocks. They are really uncomfortable, make your back hurt, get dirty in the mud, have condensation issues, get water inside, are super hot, are really cramped, they are hard to get in and out of, hurt your knees, hard to cook food in, are heavy....I could go on and on and on, but don't get a hammock or you'll really regret it.

Dave, the only thing you could do better would be to put your Paco Pad on a cot. You will never want to sleep on the ground again. Because of the thickness of the Paco Pad be sure to get a cot that sits fairly low to the ground. I have a variety of cots and would be willing to let you try them out the next time we are together.
You can even roll over at midnight and take a picture of a racoon from a cot. :)

I have seen you happily snoozing away on your cot some times even in the rain with a tarp draped over ===== and, you always are smiling in the morning.

Good advice, a paco pad on a cot looks mighty comfortable!

What kind of cot is small & lightweight? Seems like a cot would be better for keeping crawly things at bay.
