The Mohawk Solo 13 and Solo 14 (http://www.mohawkcanoes.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) are very reasonably priced, even brand new. They can handle a bit of whitewater, but are reasonably stable for anyone who is OK with the fact that a canoe is less stable than a recreational kayak (due to higher center of gravity when sitting in a canoe).

My wife (Debo) and I generally choose canoes for recreational paddling; I love the ability to move around and stretch without getting out; the gear capacity; the fact that the single blade paddle is not constantly dripping on you in cold weather (I often wear "street" clothes or cotton on flatwater, I stay that dry). But they are not for everybody; the double blade paddles common to kayaking make boat control much easier for most paddlers; canoeing requires a bit of skill development.

There are also some "cross-breed" boats that look like a kayak and a canoe got a little too friendly, and had a child. These are not my cup of tea, but every fisherman I've talked to that owns one just loves it.

You owe it to yourself to visit Ouachita Outdoor Outfitters in Hot Springs. They sell a full range of boats, and they'll be happy to share their knowledge with you, even if you end up buying the boat somewhere else. Just go back and get some accessories or other outdoor gear from them in the future; we really need to keep folks like that in business if we don't want to have to drive to Nashville or Florida just to look at a decent selection of boats. Same goes for Pack Rat in Fayetteville, if that is closer to where you live.

P.S. - You said, "for my wife", not "for us", so I assumed you were looking for a solo canoe. If not, scratch the specific models I recommended, but the rest of what I said still applies.
