River level recommendations -- Buffalo

Post by Jaytee » Wed Apr 14, 2010 9:44 pm

Headed over to Jasper for the weekend and looking to float Kyles to Pruitt and maybe Pruitt to Carver.

I know the upper Buffalo is pretty darn low right now and forecast isn't very likely for more rain, but I can't find good advice on which gauge to use and what level it should be for good floating on either of those stretches.

Particularly, "A Canoeing and Kayaking Guide to the Ozarks" mentions a gauge I've never heard of for the stretch below Pruitt and I can't find it on the internet.

the pruitt gauge needs to be above 3.5 as a minimum. the next gauge would be ST JOE. but here is the deal. at ST.joe the river drops to an all together different level . the gauge should be above 5.5 or it's a long flat water paddle.eurbie to carver would be a pretty good trip. but the gravel bars get slim in that section because of no camping at pruitt or hasty. you also can get gauge reading from american white water's web page but they are slow to change

The gauge data has all changed recently so don't go with any publication more than 2 years old. Go here and download the spreadsheet and go to the Water-Weather tab. Click on the gauge you want to see and check the reading against the River Level Guide.

Thanks for the pointers, everyone. With the low level and a late start, thanks to advice here we just had a nice 1/2 day float Pruitt to Hasty. We played it pretty conservatively because of the iffy weather and cooler temps.
