Upper Caddo River Float-Saturday April 3rd

Post by Jim Krueger » Thu Apr 01, 2010 5:44 pm

Dear All,

I'm thinking of making a float on the Caddo this Saturday. At present, the weather forecast may bring us a little rain Friday afternoon, evening, early Saturday morning, at any rate, the level is sort of lowish now, so I'm hoping it will bring the river up a bit but be East of us by put-in time. I'll look at it again tomorrow evening and make another post.
If all looks good for Saturday, I would like to meet at Caddo River Cabins and Canoe Rental, on the downstream side of the U.S. Hwy. 70 bridge at Glenwood about 10:45 am. to consolidate and shuttle to our put-in. If any of you Rec. Boaters are interested, the temps. should be pretty good, and I know we'll have a good time. The river is still pretty cold so bring extra clothes in case you, or I, swim. :) Do bring a lunch and drinks. Will update tomorrow evening about this time if the storms aren't fritzing my computer at the time.

Best Regards
Jim

Jim, where do you plan to put in? Narrows or further up? Guess it depends on water level.

Martin,

I usually like to put in at The Swinging Bridge for the scenery and added little bit of WW, if the water level is about 6.50Ft.
On Saturday morning, if the level is more like 6ft or less., I'll suggest we put in at The Narrows perhaps. I do hope it's a nice day, and we get a pretty good little shot of rain tomorrow.

Best Regards
Jim

The Caddo float is still on for in the morning. At this point we will have several paddlers but do check back in the morning before heading out,the weather we may get looks iffy for much rain this evening but a nice day tomorrow, I'll be able to see better how the levels look then and will try and post again fairly early in the morning , and check our options for specific sections. We should still be meeting at Glenwood at 10:45.

Best regards
Jim

Phone in the morning at 501and8608323 if needed.

9:15 pm. update, it looks like the NWS predictions for rainfall over SW Ark. are pretty much fizzling out... I'll check back in the morning but am pretty sure the Upper Caddo is out for the weekend. Marlo and I may or may not head up for a Glenwood to Amity run in the morning but will post fairly early if so. Sorry.

OK, the Caddo did come up more than I thought last night, it's about 6 1/4feet this morning so Marlo and I are heading over there. 10:45 or so at the bridge.

Jim, thanks for getting a group together today. Perfect, warm weather day on the Caddo. Glad to see others joining along, was a great group of people and fun. I am home now, showered and ready for bed and tired. Worth being tired to be out on the river. SYOTR!

Yes, it was a dandy day on the Caddo! :) It was very nice to see everyone, our newer kayakers, Ann Davis, and Scott Fisher&daughter Lynsey. as well as Gary and Karla, Tim and Susan from Beebe. Marlo and I had a fun day!
A special thanks to Ron Krrnik and mom, Iva who run such a nice float service and whose accesses we so benefit from every time we float that section!

Yep, that was us Johnny :) We'll certainly be floating the Caddo more very shortly. Now that the weather is warmed up, there will be some good opportunities for floats as we had today, as well as more challenging trips when the Spring rains bring the river up to the 6.5 to 7.5ft.+ range.
This was my first trip on this section this year and it's always interesting to see what changes the Winter floods have brought to the river. No hazards noted although some changes to the routes at Church Camp Rapid as well as changes to the stream course right above the Glenwood bridge where there is now a strong jet of diagonal flow entering that I'll bet will surprise many floaters when they think the adventure is over for the day :)

Happy Easter everyone.

Best Regards
Jim

Jim,

Sorry we missed it. We were in MS to see the Maw-in-law and other relatives this past weekend. We will keep an eye out for your post as we look forward to floating with you again this year. SYOTR
