Dragover?

Post by Ryan Center » Wed Mar 31, 2010 8:29 pm

I am going to the in-laws and was thinking of taking my daughter to Dragover on Saturday. Is there anything I need to be very cautious of?
It will be just me and her.

Also, I can't find any information on it on the OWP. Can someone give me directions?

Ryan, try this for directions:

Put in your zip code.

The last pourover is really sticky. Harlan rolled in it a couple of times, before it flushed him out. I assume that's the "hungry hole" rapid on the AW page. It's just a little 6 inch ledge, so be on the lookout for it.

Depending a little on levels, of course, there's nothing really to worry about at typcial levels with kids. If your kids have at least some degree of boat control and will listen to parental instructions, they can avoid problems easily. This stretch is very family friendly. It's also my preferred stretch for taking my OBU kayaking class. I've had a class on it as low as 2.3 and had my family (and another family of beginner paddlers) on it at nearly 5 ft. I put the optimal level about 3-4 feet. The features I use for teaching (and for family fun) can vary quite a bit with the level. And you just can't beat the shuttle.

Ryan
I'll echo Byron's information. I've taken my son there several times when he was just learning and a few other kids. Great place to learn how to catch eddies and ferry with no real penalty for messing up.

There's that big warning sign, like the one at the Upper Gauley put-in warning you to stay middle-left: Don't go right! We'd all do better to go left more often. :poke:
You'll also see the big rooster tail shooting up about 10' above the horizon line.

Renee, Leah told me last night she would rather go Sunday after church. I would guess like 1:30 or so. I'm hoping the tot may come up and I will go there Saturday. Got my fingers crossed.
