Water tight container

Post by Richard » Sat Apr 21, 2012 12:10 pm

I realize this will not be as rugged as a Pelican but neither will the price.
This is air and water tight. Will this survive a spill on the Yampa?

Never even been on the Yampa Richard, but that box looks like it would be toast after one serious encounter with a rock. You might consider a Power Packer by Green Horizon. I can't find a link, but they have two sizes at the Depot for thirty (I think) and fifty bucks respectively, or at least they did last time I needed one. If you added some kind of gasket material and strapped it shut with a couple of good cam straps it would probably work pretty well for you. You can also sit on them.
You come too.

The Yampa and Green River thru Split Mountain can be mellow or give you a butt whupping. Totally depends on river flow. Low flow it is a cake walk, the closer you get to 10k on the Yampa the more exciting the rapids get, when Yampa flow is in the 12 to 13 k range, Warm Springs and a couple other rapids on the Yampa get pretty big (if you elect to run the holes!).

If all you get is splash over the raft, my guess is it will work.

If the raft flips and the container gets full force of the water flow or rocks or what ever, I would bet a rapidly going down in value US Dollar this container would bend and leak.

Might work if you put everything inside the box in freezer grade zip locs.

I would not trust this container for the average river trip as far as being water tight.

See Bob Stout and borrow one of his watershed bags
or
if you can come by Jenks I have a roll down outfitters bag or a couple river tested hard containers you are welcome to borrow.

Somehow I had a feeling I couldn't get away with going cheap. ;)

I'm telling you Richard. Go to the big orange hardware store. One of those Power Packers will get you by.
You come too.

You pay your money and you takes your chances
or
something like that.

Cheap is fine long as it is a mellow trip with no raft flips
Cheap is not good if your gear gets wet and the weather turns cold

Quality water proof or at least water resistant gear bags are like medical insurance. IE glad you have it when accidents happen.

The good thing about the Yampa / Green float is things do dry fast out there but it does get cold soon as the sun goes behind the hill!

Richard email me your current address.

Richard, do not give up!! It is possible to get a cheap, water-tight container that woll survive the Yampa!! Look at the link here on the Gear page dealing with Gamma Seal Lids for your traditional pickle bucket... They work and will do fine on the Yampa trip... uh... I forgot you're riding with Roger, so maybe not!!! (All kidding aside, the only drawback is that you must either make do with the wire bale on the bucket or put a strap around it to make sure the bucket stays in the raft!) Crane

Whatever you use be sure to test it before the trip.If you use Gamma Seals I would put everything in ziplocks if it really needs to stay dry.Have had some water get in mine, might not have had closed tight enough.Have wondered if lubricaticating the "O"rings might make them easier to open.Anyone tried this?

Come on over, Richard! You'll be welcome!

As to the leaking Gamma Seal buckets, it is my observation that if you put things in them so tightly that they get out-of-round, it can affect the water proof-ness. Also, if they are squeezed under pressure. But, with reasonable care they do a good job!

Careful Roger, I offered to send Richard one of my dry bags but he allowed you were gonna loan him one.

This thing might get complicated!!!!!

However, if Yampa Flow stays around todays value of 3200 cfs, might not even be a splash on the raft!!!!
