Eagles and Icicles Float Trip, Trip Report
Eagles and Icicles Float Trip, Trip Report
Well folks it is that time of the year again. The NW Chapter and Ozark Mountain Trading Company OMTC (http://www.ozarkmtc.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) are teaming up to host our annual Eagle & Icicles float trip.
What: This float trip is open to everyone, and we encourage all to attend! This is a family friendly event on a class I river (there are no technical rapids/whitewater). Pack and lunch and come join us. We'll take care of the shuttle.
When: Saturday, January 31 rain/snow flurries/or shine. We will meet at OMTC at 10:00 to load boats and will leave for the put-in at 10:30. OMTC will open at 9:00 and will have coffee and doughnuts, so get there early to check out their full line of boats and gear (including winter gear) for sale.
Where: We will float a section of the White River. We will put on just below the Beaver Lake Dam at the boat launch at Beaver Dam Site Park. Depending on the weather, we will either take out at the Spider Creek Access (~4 miles) or Houseman Access (~8 miles). If you are running a little late and miss us at OMTC just drive to the Dam Site and meet us at the put-in. (Directions: http://goo.gl/maps/FRkX9" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)
Why:A great opportunity to float and get to know many members of the Northwest Chapter/ACC, and enjoy the White River, Queen of the Ozarks. This is a prime fishing section and we always see icicles and occasionally an eagle. This is also a great chance for those new to paddling in the winter. There will be many experienced boaters there to ask questions and possibly try/borrow some gear.
Feel free to contact me with any questions or just post up on this thread. I would like to try to get a head count so post up if you plan to attend. This will also help us organize the shuttle better.
I look forward to seeing everyone there!

I say, and I intend it emphatically, let the river be.

Re: Eagles and Icicles Float Trip, Sat Jan 31st
Hello,
I just joined recently and got into kayaking last summer. I am part of ACC, I think the River Valley chapter since I am in Fort Smith. I would like to attend but currently I only have my 10 foot boat. What is the pace going to be like? I just don't want to fall too far behind. I am trying to get OMTC to let me use the 14.5 foot boat I am buying from them but they are discussing it with the owner this weekend.
Also to verify the initial meet up that morning will be at the Garfield OMTC location?
Thanks!
Jeremy

Hey Jeremy,
The pace is slow, we typically have a lot of beginners on the trip. We can make it work, even if we did the 8 mile long trip we can always stage a vehicle at the 4 mile trip for those that want to paddle the shorter section.
Yes, the Garfield OMTC, I linked a google map with its location.
Look forward to meeting you then,

Great to see you on here and joining a trip, Jeremy! You'll be fine in the boat you have. Go paddle with some of the finest folks in the ACC and have a great time. I'd be there myself but I have another commitment. Hope to SYOTR soon.
You come too.

Looks like we got lucky and the rain/snow will hold out for us, and arrive later in the evening because we need it.
Here are a few shots from years past. Note JFK with his Pelican kayak and angler life jacket in 2011, Liz and I meet him (or Steve from California I can't remember) and Taylor on this trip. We also meet Donny Dennis (and many others) in 2013 or 14? Never know what up and coming boater will be there. Come on out and help support a great event.

We unfortunately can't make it. I hope it's a good float.

There were more eagles than icicles on this trip. We had a great time and enjoyed getting to know some new folks.

George, it was great to meet you and Sherri. And we're neighbors! Next good rain, let's go hit some moving water.
It was a pleasant float and we missed the rain and almost had some sun. Thanks, Kristian, for organizing. And thank you Ozark Mountain Trading Company for the hospitality and shuttle.
