Change of plans to the Frog Sat Mar 29

Post by Liz Caldwell » Sat Mar 29, 2014 7:37 am

Heather and I and maybe Mitch and Bob are meeting at Turner Bend at 11 a.m. today for sandwiches and then planning to do Indian Creek to Byrd's. Possibly could divert to the Frog if we find it's running. Feel free to join in, just call me to make sure whether we stick to the Mulberry or head on up to the Frog. 501-350-4364.

Wouldn't you know, as soon as I post we change our plans. It's the Frog! Probably meeting at the put-in around 11:30, but call me at 501-350-4364 for a definite time.

You're driving by an optimum Mulberry for a low Frog run?

So how was surfing on the Frog today? I've never been on it below 3'.

Gonna give it a go on the Frog this morning, Sunday, and will report in later tonight on how it is.

Going to be a beautiful day.

Meeting in Rudy at 10:30.

Well, there was the incessant sunshine. The temps so warm we had to either roll to cool off, or others removed layers during our first rest break. There were too many eddies to catch. There was a wave that just wanted to spin you right around which made me look like a better surfer than I really am.

Luckily, we had a resilient bunch of paddlers so, despite these terrible conditions, our group still had fun! ;)

I think most times I've been on the Frog have been at "2.fun" levels, so I guess I just don't know any better. 8)

Thanks for the report, Lupe. Sounds like I need to try it at "2.fun".

It's certainly more fun at 2.6 than at 4'.. When it is higher, we like the Ash to Grotto run for bigger rapids.

I got on the Frog on Sunday afternoon. I would guess the level was 2.65. We had clouds to start but ended the day in abundant sunshine. Redbud Trees were just starting to show some signs of life. Didn't see the excursion train which is always a fun sight.

I will post some photos and video later but we had a really good time for the level. We did scrape in a few places where the river fanned out but never had to get out and drag. When the river tightened down to a slot there was plenty of water and speed!

We could have gone over to the Mulberry and hit it at a perfect level for some big water, but, we had time constraints and some lesser experienced folks. The low level on the Frog made the swims very manageable whereas we would have had some boat chasing to do on the Mulberry!

All in all, it was GREAT! I don't think I would go much lower than 2.6 as you would have to drag a bit.

Hated to miss seeing everyone on the Mulberry but domestic duties have kept my boating days limited so far this year. We had tons of ice damage to clean up just to get back to normal. I think we are ahead of the curve now! See everyone at Canoe School if not sooner!

Some of us from the NW chapter have agreed that the min level is 2.6' for a good day.

The nice thing; It's a really good day at 2.6'. :kayak: :canoe:
