Bad, Grumpy swim

Post by Twindad » Mon Jun 16, 2014 9:37 pm

Not sure if it's kosher to post a link to a video by someone I don't know, but I guess if it's hardly any different than just finding it on the 'Tube. Anyway, this is just the sort of thing I try like heck to avoid ...

Jeez, that one makes me really gasp for air as I watched.

Note: Stay away from that part of the Ocoee!

He appears to have the cam mounted lower than the top of his helmet. Something seems to put the POV lower in the water. I can't see how hIs head could be under water and still hear his voice on the clip. But anyway, resist the urge to do something fancy for the crowd at the putin.

I have a old model GoPro.

Seems like they used to have a Chest Mount in their catalog. Just from the angle of the paddling shots, my guess is a chest mount.

Anyway, excellent video of what can easily happen on that side of the river!

tomOzarkVideo comment plus one!

In a really good WW stream, that spot (in a run full of bad spots to swim) is one of the worst to get outside help.

The swimmer did well to basically self rescue!

At least he did not get worked in Grumpy's Hole. I have witnessed someone swim into that, and it was not pretty. Quite the beatdown.

On a trip out East years ago.I watched a member of our group get really worked hard in Grumpy's hole. He came out balling like a baby, walked back to the truck, and ran shuddle for us the rest of the trip. Not a place to swim for sure. -M-

Yikes.. nasty swim. I bet he never makes a mistake on which way to lean when impacting a rock again!

Why in the #$#% would someone go over there and pick on that mess? There are lots of much "safer" places to show off without the penalty of a major beat down.

My first time over there, I missed the ferry twice, rolled my canoe up on the lip of the hole, and put in at the rails for the final run. Did not swim, thank the equation for universal gravitation.

My Obsessive-Compulsive children like to adjust their sprayskirts in moving water. So youngest son puts in at the left of the Grumpy ramp, flips on the eddy line, rolls, and then decides his skirt isn't attached correctly and pulls it off the rim while running down the right side. He flips again, gets beat about the head and shoulders, rolls, and runs the ledge no problem. None of this on-cam, of course.

Actually, the first part IS on-cam. I'll post in this thread.

Many many moons ago, I was in a NOC playboat week long clinic. We went to the Ocoee every day to practice.

One day the instructors decided to take the entire class over there. One showed us a "playboat" line and the other explained the line and the things to do and not do.

We all had good runs. However, that was enough for me. Never went back over there, do not want to.

Thomas is in his creek boat in the clip below from August 2013. He has now graduated to fooling with his PLAYBOAT skirt in Grumpy's. Makes a Dad proud ...

He kept a cool head and made some good strokes in the right places. Kids just OWN this sport. They pick it up so damn quickly!
