LITTLE MISSOURI TRIP TUESDAY AUG. 12, 2008

Post by CAPTAIN ALEVE » Mon Aug 11, 2008 11:49 am

I'd like to paddle the Little Mo Tuesday, 8/12/08. Albert Pike to 84 if it is there; 84 (or Blocker Creek) to 12000 if the upper is not runnable. Say meet at the 84 bridge at 10:00 a.m. Must have several more paddlers to make this trip happen. Anyone interested?

Yes Yes Yes! I may have a bit less experience than some of the other people out there, but Little MO is one I've always been eager for. The last thing I paddled was the Cossatot (maiden voyage '08) and did alright. Considering the water level tomorrow how do you think the two rivers compare in difficulty?

If the Little Mo is down to about 5.5 feet they will be similar. How did you do through the Esses? Did you catch eddies in the Esses? Did you run any of the Falls? Are you experienced enough to swim safely? to help me if I get pinned? to give someone a bow to roll up on? to toss a rope to a swimmer stuck in a hole? to be able to recognize and avoid hazards that might cause someone else to have to try to rescue you (and endanger themselves in doing so)?

Well you asked all the right questions, let me do the best job I can in honestly answering them. I did catch several eddy's in the esses, I did the falls and only swam in the washing machine, swim feet downstream and up. I have not taken any rescue courses specifically and I have never had to assist in unpinning a boat. I have loaned my bow for someone to roll up on, as well as that "hand of God" drill. I don't own a rope and have never thrown one either, but I was planning on heading down to the local outfitter and picking up a few things, I may get one while I'm there if they have it. As for recognizing hazards I have partaken in the excellent instruction given at the School of Whitewater on the Mullberry two times once under Kim tucker, sabrina Carson, Rick Ramsey, and once with James smith, and Matt plank, ( just in case you know them) as well as one instructor out east, and one on the Saint. So what I'm really looking forward to is adding a few notches to my belt and putting all that instruction to good use, as safely as possible of course.

Sounds to me like you're ready!

I will do everything possible to come on Tuesday if the Upper Section holds (which as quickly as it is dropping...I'm not too sure it will be there)...if only the Lower section holds, I'll probably not be available as it's really not a good time for me to be away from work. :(

I'll keep my eye on the gauge and see what happens....

Sounds like you will do fine Adam, especially since the water level is falling fast. I'll be sure to bring an extra rope in case you don't get one for me to catch. Some part of the river will be runnable tomorrow; the meeting time and place are good no matter which section we end up paddling - provided we get enough boaters to join in.

Back has been troublesome ever since I've moved. :( But, I need to dust off the boat and go somewhere.
Not sure I wanna go that far and do the lower either. Would be open to any section of the Tot thou.
So, I'll be just like the weather, if both the upper creek and my back are both there in the am, I'll go. :?

I wanna go, but the district is making it increasingly difficult to earn the 60 hours of annual PD hours, forcing us to attend their PD vs. earning it at universities or online from other institutions. :x Why didn't this weather happen while I was off for three weeks in Aug.?!!! :hammer:

I'm not ruling out Wed. Looks like dropping levels are leveling and I'd be glad to run the rec boat down the lower stretch if it holds at minimum.

With more heavy rain forecast for that area tomorrow, maybe Wednesday will turn out to be the golden day. Wednesday will be a bit better for me to get out of work, so I'm going to keep my fingers crossed that strong rain tomorrow sets up a good situation for Wed (I'll still only take off for the upper though)...

Still watching radar, forecast and gauges...

I could go Wednesday, but have a lunch meeting on Tuesday. Drats! I'd love to go but can't miss the meeting ...
How about a Friday float from Narrows Dam again? I thought I was going to be out of town, but that all got moved to next week, so my schedule is open except Tuesday.
And, Mike, I'm not sure I qualify per all your questions, but I've survived so far ... but I also understand if you need Lupe, Chester or someone to help out!
Oh, which part did we float last Friday ... that was so FUN!
If you go Tuesday, have fun!

I'll check the radar about 6:00 a.m. and post final plans. Tuesday is the only day I can go.

Same here. If not I may try to tag along with someone on the Cossatot.

Conditions look good. Water should be at 5 feet when we put in, rain should be ending about the same time. The upper section will be runnable. I'll be at the 84 bridge at 10:00 a.m. Who will be meeting me there?

I'll be at the K-Mart parking lot in Little Rock at 7:30 a.m. if anyone wants to carpool to the river.
