Bentonville City Council Meeting, Tuesday, Oct 13, 6pm

Post by Schildwache » Thu Oct 08, 2015 1:30 pm

Friends of Little Sugar Creek request the attendance of like-minded supporters of a free-flowing Little Sugar Creek at this meeting. It is most important to note that the meeting is not held at Bentonville City Hall, but at the Community Development Building at 305 SW A St. An exhorbitantly expensive rebuilt dam will solve none of the problems of Lake Bella Vista. A flowing stream has recreational, ecological, financial, and economic benefits. We hope to see as many as possible at the meeting, particularly Bentonville residents.

This is our chance to show Bentonville mayor, Bob "the dam-builder" McCaslin, that we don't want his expensive and harmful dam across Little Sugar Creek, instead we want a free-flowing creek for all to enjoy.
The cost of building and maintaining a safe dam for the sole purpose of re-creating a shallow, 20-acre, recreational pond that was never successful is a waste of community resources – and not just tax dollars. A failed dam has deprived four generations of Arkansans and our visitors of the beauty and recreational possibilities of an Ozark stream that was created over thousands of years.
Dr. Brahana will be there to speak to the Council, if they let him. If they don't, the press will surely take note of the city's closed door tactics. Come out and help support the rational contingent. Let's stop the Bentonville dam builders.

After the meeting, Pedaler's Pub, right across the street, is having beer specials. The owner of Pedaler's Pub will also be commenting as a business owner about the value of restoring the flow of Little Sugar Creek.
The City Council meets at 305 SW A. STREET, BENTONVILLE, AR, USA. 6:00pm!

Approaching 400 signatures to Free Little Sugar Creek, remove the dam!

Bella Vista Lake was a poorly designed lake.

1. Lake to watershed ratio is 2,550:1

2. The largest area lake to watershed ratio in a lake built by Cooper properties, is 43:1 (Lake Ann).

3. The amount of nitrogen and phosphorus flowing into Lake Bella Vista from the huge watershed is simply overwhelming the 20 acre lake.

4. This does not indicate a polluted watershed but rather just a lake that is too small to process the effluence form this watershed.

5. The stream can handle and process the nutrient load until you slow the water and let it stagnate, as indicated by the clear water in the streams above the lake verses the excessive blue-green algae blooms and filamentous algae growing in the lake.

The watershed will continue to develop which will only increase the nutrient runoff to this lake.

FRIENDS OF LITTLE SUGAR CREEK ADVOCATE FREEING LITTLE SUGAR CREEK
AND SAVING TAXPAYERS’ MONEY

The Friends of Little Sugar Creek invite all our friends to attend the Bentonville City Council Meeting on 10 November to speak in support of removing the failed Bella Vista Lake Dam and Freeing Little Sugar Creek. The Dam project will be on the agenda for this City Council meeting and we need your support to speak against this dam. Please attend the November. 10, Bentonville City Council Meeting at the Community Development Building, 305 SW A St, Bentonville. Arrive at 5:30 and sign up to speak against this wasteful and destructive project.
The removal of the Bella Vista Lake dam and the restoration of Little Sugar Creek would cost tax payers less than $1.0 million. Why are tax payers being asked to spend $3.5 million to repair this failed dam and lake when Little Sugar Creek could be restored for less than $1.0 million? Removal of aging and unsafe dams is happening nationwide. It is time for Bentonville to be a leader in the beneficial removal of dams and not a destroyer of native streams. Come to the Bentonville City Council Meeting and speak out against this wasteful and destructive dam project.
The Friends of Little Sugar Creek is a group of concerned citizens who are advocating for a cost effective and environmentally friendly alternative to the rebuilding of the dam that created Lake Bella Vista in 1915. In 2008 the dam was classified as a “failed” dam by the Association of State Dam Safety Officials, listing the cause of failure as “hydrologic deficiencies and faulty material.” Rather than spending approximately $3.5 million dollars on its repair, Friends of Little Sugar Creek advocates for allowing Little Sugar Creek to once again follow its natural path. Freeing Little Sugar Creek would recreate a living flowing Ozark stream and provide new opportunities for family recreation along the creek while eliminating the poor water quality that has plagued this lake since its development. The new dam would only perpetuate this dirty lake. Restoring Little Sugar Creek would cost tax payers less than $1.0 million. Why are tax payers being asked to spend $3.5 million on a failed dam and lake project when less than $1.0 million would create a success for the community? Come and speak out against this failed dam project.
The flow of Little Sugar Creek was blocked to create Lake Bella Vista in 1915 when a poorly-engineered dam and lake was constructed to quickly and cheaply create a lake to support real estate development and provide recreation for a new resort. By 1925, guests were complaining that the water in the lake had become murky and was no longer suitable for recreation which is the situation that exists today. The new dam would only perpetuate this failed lake. For more information about Friends of Sugar Creek and the history of the stream contact the Friends of Little Sugar Creek Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/friendsoflittlesugarcreek" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.
