‎The Ozark Society

The Arkansas River Valley streams of Lee Creek and Frog Bayou may again be at risk for dams.

The City of Ft. Smith will collect stakeholder input regarding a “new watershed management plan” for Lee Creek.

There will be two meetings – Lee Creek, July 29th, 6:00 PM at the Van Buren Public Library. The second meeting, about Frog Bayou, will be July 30th, 6:00 PM at Lake Ft. Smith State Park Visitor Center. Watch the websites for any changes on meeting locations.

Please make every effort to attend and speak up for continuing to protect these streams from totally unnecessary dams. The Lake Ft. Smith Dam was raised in height several years ago, at great cost. By this action, Lake Ft. Smith projected that it could provide water to surrounding communities until, at least, 2050.

I am hoping that this will be a positive meeting where we can talk to them about water conservation and alternative water sources. We are all stakeholders for these creeks and we must express how important they are as free flowing streams. I hope we can discuss ways to care for and preserve these streams and not just how they can be used.
