VOUS CANOE JOUSTING! TOM, DON'T READ THIS.

Post by Deuce » Thu Jun 26, 2014 10:42 am

There will be a canoe jousting tournament at Rendezvous this year. IT WILL BE FRIDAY NIGHT. To compete you'll need a tandem canoe, (material and construction don't matter and I can provide at least one canoe if necessary), helmet, suit of armor, lance and really big first aid kit. Okay, you won't need armor or lance, but you will be required to protect your noggin, and with this crew a giant first aid kid wouldn't be a bad idea. :wht: (Look away, Tom.)

But Deuce, you may ax, what is Canoe Jousting? Well, it's like this, kids. There are two canoes on the water and each has a paddler in the stern and a jouster in the bow. Lances will be provided, but if you're a canoe jousting pro (well, let's be honest, if you're a canoe jousting pro you probably have too much time on your hands, but I digress) you're welcome to bring your own provided you're willing to relinquish it if it doesn't meet standards or I really like it.

There will be two ways to win your heat; points scored or knock down, or in the case of simultaneous knock down total points scored will break the tie. How are points awarded? Frankly I don't know, but you needn't worry your pretty little head about that. Please note, however, that heraldry (that's an actual jousting term!) will be a signifcant scoring component. In other words, the fancier your decorations the more points you rack up even before the first clash of lances!

Assuming noone is killed or grievously injured, which might not be valid assumptions under the circumstances (Tom, I really hope you're not reading this) this should become a very popular Rendezvous Friday night tradition, but only if we have contestants. So, start rounding up your horse, uh, I mean boat, and team. No promises but I might even be able to scrounge a prize if participation warrants it.

So, the Challenge (another jousting term believe it or not) has been issued by your King of Arms (unless I can find another King or Queen of Arms; yep, another jousting term). Dare you accept?
You come too.

This sounds like one of those events on that game show, whose name I can't remember, where they go through an obstacle course with water-based things that knock you down and drop you into a pool. Should be good entertainment for all, especially spectators.

That's my fervent hope, Timothy. And remember, if it goes well it was my idea. Otherwise it was Gordon's. :poke2:

A few thoughts on safety possibilities

Full coverage helmets should be mandatory, football helmets with face guards or hockey helmet with face guards ideal!

Look around and ask to see if we cannot get a couple of catchers chest guards - ACC should provide these even if we buy them

Padded gloves as in cross country motorcycle type

Pad the jousting poles well on the ends

pad the canoe cross thwarts well with 4 inch thick paco pads -- this is a must

These simple things would go a long way towards preventing serious injury, especially the paco pad on the canoes

I was going to recommend we remove the "bulky PFD" to allow for more protection for the jouster while allowing freedom of movement. I found an instructional video [about half way - A Knight's Tale: Training Video] on why that could be bad.

Pretty sure the taunting Frencher is Walter Felton. Watch some footage of him in that gold helmet and I think you'll agree.
