DamNation Screening, 5-16-14

Post by kru1 » Tue Apr 22, 2014 10:31 am

For this year's Earthday, the Northwest Chapter is pleased to announce a free screening of the award-winning film, DamNation (http://www.damnationfilm.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)!

When: Friday, May 16th, 7:00pm. The doors will open at 6:30pm

Where: Historic Old High Auditorium, 406 NW 2nd Street, Bentonville, AR 72712. Located just off the Historic Downtown Bentonville Square (http://goo.gl/maps/8CiVB" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;).

The Northwest Chapter has voted to fund the screening of this film. This event is free for everyone (ACC & Non ACC members alike). To date, this will be the only screening that remains in the South & Midwest (http://damnationfilm.com/screenings#more" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;). Please help us to make this event successful by sharing this information with anyone who may be interested. The venue will hold over 500 people, so there is plenty of space. Detailed information about the film can be found in the attached PressKit PDF.

The film explores the change in our national attitude from pride in big dams as engineering wonders to the growing awareness that our own future is bound to the life and health of our rivers. When obsolete dams come down, rivers are bound back to life, giving fish the right of return to primeval spawning grounds, after decades without access.

This film will make you look at dams differently and, hopefully, make us all question the usefulness of certain dams in our state. Dams in Arkansas have serious ramifications on the natural Ozark ecology. They adversely effect water quality and contribute to erosion by keeping silt and debris from flowing downstream and nurturing the riverbanks. Old dams can be unsafe and pose a threat to our communities. A majority of our dams were built for the sole purpose of recreation. They do not generate electricity nor are they suitable as a drinking water source. After years of silt accumulation, many of these impoundments are no longer suited for recreation and many of the lakes/ponds have become toxic bodies of water prohibiting recreation & native ecological communities.

Some of the Film's Accolades:
1. Winner of the Audience Choice Award at SXSW Film Festival in Austin.
2. At the Environmental Film Festival at Yale, DamNation won the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Choice award!!
3. Time Magazine lists DamNation among 3 "vastly important political documentaries" to watch in 2014!

We hope to see you there!

Bumping this to the top. Go see it and be proud that we stopped several dams here in Arkansas. There will be more battles to come.

The Magna Carta of 1215 saw the benefits of removing dams and river obstructions for fish and river navigation; clause #33 states:

"All fish-weirs shall be removed from the Thames, the Medway, and throughout the whole of England, except the sea-coast."

FYI - the old pump house dam on the West Fork of the White is a potential dam that can be removed in coming years AND stands a chance of becoming a white water park and play spot. thanks for putting this on NWACC!

Make a pilgrimage up to Bentonville. Bring your friends and meet some new ACC friends. Have a beer afterwards with us at The Pressroom on the square in Bentonville.

Unfortunately, the powers that be will not allow us to have two screenings. I was hoping that we would be allowed to send it to all the chapters, but it doesn't work like that.

Sorry, but as Greg mentioned come join us up in the Northwest. Make an overnight trip out of it and hit the Ford up on Saturday, or join us on a possible Little Sugar Creek float on Saturday.

My wife asked the manager of the Pressroom in Bentonville if she could hang a movie poster on their community board. The woman said, "as long as it is not political". My wife said it wasn't political, it is about the issue of aging dams in America and what we should do with those that are no longer useful. The woman replied, "what are yall trying to do, take out Beaver Dam?" My wife replied "No, dams that are no longer useful or may cause extreme environmental damage." The woman said she'd have to check out the film's website before she let a poster go on their community board. So, I told you Bentonville was a conservative place. Maybe we should plan on meeting for drinks at the 21C hotel afterwards. I think the Pressroom doesn't want to offend their clients that love Beaver Dam and expensive coffees.
