Buffalo River Questions

Post by Big Daddy D » Wed May 02, 2012 9:27 pm

Some young men from our church are planning a trip to the Buffalo June 6 - 9. They are wanting to do from Ponca to Kyles Landing one day. Is it even runnable that time of year? Which campgrounds and outfitters would you recommend?

If that section is too low, which sections of the Buffalo are best during summer? Thanks for your help in advance.

Chances are, Ponca-Kyles section will not be running then, unless there's been recent and significant rainfall. They'll need to head downstream...maybe as far as Tyler Bend or further.

There's plenty of fine hikes in the Ponca area, though - Lost Valley, Hemmed-in Hollow,Big Bluff, Indian Creek, and Whitaker Point are all popular and pretty spectacular. And you can always cool off with a swim at the Ponca low-water bridge or other water hole at the end of the day.

Hopefully we'll all get lucky and have a really wet May-June, and your friends will score the Ponca-Kyles run.
Let there be rain!

Like the others have said that section of the river most likely won't me floatable in the summer. A float that includes the hwy 14 bridge (dillard's ferry) is your best option. Options include Maumee to DF (1 day float), Spring Creek to DF (1/2 day)...or you can float past the bridge to Rush. The easiest logistically, will be N. Maumee to DF, so it will also be the most crowded. But it's a nice float.
