Mormon Creek Hike Pics and Vids

Post by iYak » Thu Jan 15, 2009 11:16 pm

We hiked Mormon Creek last weekend and took some pictures and video. Mormon runs into Mill Creek and then the lower Mulberry.

You can't tell from the pictures, but the creek is constantly sloping downhill with some big drops thrown in between. Great creek and a nice hike last weekend.

When you get towards the end of the photos, you will see the largest drop Mammer Jammer. It's a doosie

Mormon Creek has been run once previously at a lower water by Steve R., and his cousin the other Steve R., and some others. I can't wait to see it running big, it looks like one big long waterslide with big, clean drops inbetween.

Your almost correct.
It has been run twice as far as I know.
Steve "Dog" Robinson pioneered the creek and put together the first crew, I don't remember the makeup of that crew.
I wasn't on it. A few years ago, "Dog", myself "Paddledog" and Ozark Tom had a run at what I would consider on the low side of optimum. I am not too sure if I would want to run it at high or flood. It is very fast with a lot of fiber (wood).

That is correct.
There is one point where the water all goes into/under the root structure of a LARGE Sycamore tree at the bottom of a slide.
Lots of strainers, some in challenging spots. I'd walk it first in the future and try to get a look at the major drops to confirm them being clear. Hard to do, but better than the alternative...

It starts out very small, but builds gradient and volume quickly.

Bring a saw :D

Thanks for the corrections.

The creek is clean now, except for a couple of trees right at the putin.

Looks as if you all had a good day!
Great pics!
Steve and Tom, we cleaned all of the wood out a while back. It took a couple of saws and a couple of days of hard work.
I think we should change the name to Bee Creek. In the process of cleaning the wood out of the creek, I got into a ground Yellow Jacket nest and was stung about 50- 60 times all over the backs of my arms and head. Nick said I did a pretty good dance!
A big thanks to all who helped with the clean up effort!

Is it clear of wood right now? Always would want to hike down it right before a run I bet - a tree across the creek at high water would result in disaster!

one of the bigger drops had a tree limbs in the "pool" below. also, there is a logging road on river left from the put-in to the Mill Cr. confluence. The creekbed isn't visible from it but its close on the lower half.

"High-fiber" - funny. Man, that's a true ditch run, but could be a hoot at higher water. Tip o' the hat to all those involved - scouters, early descenders, wood cleaners, and videographers. Thanks for posting.

We're due for some big water, aren't we?
Let there be rain!
