Re: Pulp mill lower Caddo east of Amity AR
Cpresoz I am new to this blog, posting to share my concerns with the Sun project. There are many issues and very little information from AEDC. The Arkadelphia business leaders have provided some details, but there are no plans for an Environmental Impact Assessment or a Due Diligence study. AEDC is ...

Re: Pulp mill lower Caddo east of Amity AR
Yarborough, You asked about the $300 million paid to Sun. I would need to post a spreadsheet, the details are boring. Let me try to answer. You are correct, Sun is not getting a check. But the incentives given to Sun are real money paid with our taxes. All public services (roads, sewer, police, etc....

Re: Pulp mill lower Caddo east of Amity AR
Yarborough, To be blunt, we have two choices: one is to start taking care of Mother Earth hoping is not too late; the other is continue polluting and using nature as an infinite resource. The second choice would guarantee the extinction of most life in this planet. Humans would be the first to go. T...

Re: Pulp mill lower Caddo east of Amity AR
Yarborough, My apology if I said something you don’t want to hear, I respect your opinion. Forest carbon offsets and other types of carbon credits paid by polluters (in Arkansas or other states) can be used to compensate forest owners. All they would have to do is keep secure, standing forests to st...

Re: Pulp mill lower Caddo east of Amity AR
Prophet, The Sun mill will use 3 to 4 million tons of wood per year. Trucking round wood on 40-ton logging trucks is expensive. Sun will buy from forests near the mill. 400 daily deliveries, every day will be needed. Deforestation will spread like cancer around the mill Sun is a high volume, low-cos...

Re: Pulp mill lower Caddo east of Amity AR
Roger, Here is the latest on the Sun mill: instead of a fluff mill, Sun plans to build a dissolving pulp mill. Dissolving pulp is used to make rayon and other fibers. The inside of the mill is different but the pollution and wastewater on the Ouachita River are about the same. The mill would use 16 ...

Re: Pulp mill lower Caddo east of Amity AR
Yarborough,
The IP paper mill destroyed the economy of Pine Bluff, people moved out and there are no jobs. Looks like Flint Michigan. Crime rate is due to the lost economy. Arkadelphia would be next

Re: Pulp mill lower Caddo east of Amity AR
Prophet The Ouachita National Forest is near the area. In addition to the Sun mill, there are two wood pellet mills planned for 2016, one at Pine Bluff and one at Monticello. The wood pellet market is in Europe, mostly in the UK. Brexit may have taken the subsidies from the Drax UK power station, a ...

Re: Pulp mill lower Caddo east of Amity AR
Yarborough, Have you been to Pine Bluff? It has the highest crime rate per capita in the US With the $300 million Arkansans are giving China, we could have instead thousands of jobs in many communities, promoting local businesses. Sustainable growth. Size matters, this is a big a** mill, and all we ...

Re: Pulp mill lower Caddo east of Amity AR
Yarborough, There are many references to the damage done by heavy trucks - the 400 daily deliveries coming to the mill would be using similar roads. Here is one reference: "Heavy trucks obviously cause more road damage than cars, but how much more? According to a GAO study, Excessive Truck Weig...

Re: Pulp mill lower Caddo east of Amity AR
Yarborough, Sun is not creating 250 jobs paying $52,000 per year for Arkansas. This is a false statement used to make the deal look good. Fluff mills run around the clock with several shifts, requiring many Chinese managers and supervisors. The 250 mill jobs include the Chinese staff. According to C...

Re: Pulp mill lower Caddo east of Amity AR
Yarbrough, thank you for your comments, it gives me an opportunity to state the facts: Shandong Sun is not investing in Arkansas. Sun wants to build a mill to make fluff and ship it to China. They have polluted the air, the rivers and have no forests: they can't build a fluff mill in China. The mill...

Re: Pulp mill lower Caddo east of Amity AR
Arkansas-Santa, Oaks and hardwoods will be soon gone replaced with pulpwood. Tree farms are not forests, just sticks in the ground. With a single buyer, Sun will have tree farms bidding and drive the price of pulpwood down, down, down. Timely deliveries driven by the mill production schedule will be...

Re: Pulp mill lower Caddo east of Amity AR
Arkansas-Santa,
Fluff kraft mills create massive water pollution: the mill would use 16 million gallons of clean water per day.
11 millions of gallons of wastewater would be dumped into the Ouachita River, every day.
Surprisingly, no one seems to care. Why?
