Re: Trip Planning Advice Needed for Buffalo River

Another thing to keep in mind is that if the river is running high your miles per day goes up. I've has trips that it was a struggle to get 10 miles in a day and trips I did 12 miles before lunch. Plan several trips of varying lengths depending on water levels etc. so you can go with the flow when y...

Re: What are some cringe-worthy 'don'ts,' that you've witnes

My cringe worthy thing was being told you could drink the water in the Buffalo without filtering or boiling. I think I'll pass on cryptosporidium...

Re: Lower Buffalo around Christmas

I'm seriously thinking about a 4 day trip the week after Christmas. I did a Christmas trip last year and really enjoyed it. All depends on rain at this point.

Re: Buffalo June 11th

Just wanted to post a post-mortum on the trip. We started last Monday at Gilbert and pulled out at Shipps Ferry on Saturday about noon. Monday we were delayed by the bad thunderstorm for about 2 or 3 hours. Got about 2" of rain, 50 or so mph winds, lots of lightning. The only really scary part ...

Re: Buffalo June 11th

I'm not sure what it's called but there is a camp spot at a hairpin bend in the Buffalo that is surrounded on 3 sides by 600' bluffs. It's as close to a perfect camp site as I've ever been to. I guess I'm just wanting to get my girlfriend to that spot so she can see what I babble on about all the ti...

Re: Buffalo June 11th

Thanks for all the info and maps. We talked last night and after weighing all the variables we decided to live life on the edge and do the Buffalo. I hate dragging but love the camping on the lower Buffalo. I'll do the eleven point on one of my solo trips where I don't have to worry about keeping ot...

Re: Buffalo June 11th

Sure, send me the email and I'll see how it sounds. I'll have to check with the girlfriend tonight and see what she thinks. Kru: How cold was the water? Good flow? Any weird laws like Oklahoma? (no coolers over 48 quarts) If you can only have 3.2% beer you need a 100 quart cooler minimum just for on...

Re: Buffalo June 11th

I use SW Paddler a lot. There's still nothing better than talking to someone though. Some of that info might be old. I just wish that last rain would have brought the levels up. I really thought it was going to be enough. It seems like either every river in the south is dry or has too many dams to p...

Re: Buffalo June 11th

The party river part is a big turn off for me. I like as much solitude as possible. If I can't work it out I can always paddle the Neches in East Texas. The water isn't great but it's very remote.
Or who knows, maybe there will be a freak storm...Everyone wash your cars!..:)

Re: Buffalo June 11th

If it was just me I'd be all in for going a little farther North. I have a lot of constraints on this trip. I can't leave Texas (Houston) until Sunday and I have to be back the following Sunday. My girlfriend is not a real great paddler so the river has to be an easy paddle....real easy... I'm comfo...

Buffalo June 11th

I'm taking next week off to take my girlfriend on a river trip and originally wanted to to the Buffalo from Gilbert to Schipps Ferry. I see that Gilbert is black but downriver is green. Anybody been through there lately? Is it doable or am I just wasting time? I seriously don't want to portage in th...

Re: MID-BUFFALO MAY 14 - 18 CANCELLED

So, how many gallons to the mile are you getting? Seriously though, I know I can haul everything up there. It's just that driving for 12 hours with that much gear is a bit much...:) My last trip in the spring I bucked a 25 mph headwind almost the whole way up and gas killed me. Going through the mou...

Re: MID-BUFFALO MAY 14 - 18 CANCELLED

I mentioned the Current and she said she didn't want to drive that far. I know it's not that much different considering we're comign from Houston but she thinks it is. We're doing a 5 day trip but I'd have to leave on June the 3rd and be back by June 10th. I'm praying for rain, the fallback plan is ...

Re: MID-BUFFALO MAY 14 - 18 CANCELLED

I've been planning a trip for June with my girlfriend (her first river trip) for months. Looks like it's not gonna happen this year....Can you guys run water hoses to the river or something?

Re: BUFFALO RIVER - DEC 17-23 2011 - RED 17-18

Actually the canoe cover was my own design. I wanted something that used the lacing to hold it on and velcro so it was fast to put on and remove. It's 2 parts so it can be undone in the middle and paddled while it's on. It would keep most of the rain out if you wear a poncho and spread it out. At ni...
