Passing of Don "Motor" Sims

I just learned today of the death of Don "Motor" Sims. He was an avid kayaker in the Russellville area in the 80s and 90s. He paddled a red dancer along with other members of the "red boat in the hole" gang. These included Motor, Gary Fisher, Mike Hottinger, and Dennis Vosburg am...

This is how Big Piney looked at 10AM Saturday. It wouldn't have been a very long jump off the rocks! Walter

New raft seat

I need to replace the seat on my rowing frame since it just didn't hold up under 20+ years of river use! I see that the new NRS seats have a plastic body with the foam/vinyl covering. My old seat has the formed metal with foam/vinyl covering. It was very long lasting except the covering eventually c...

Re: Mike Beard

Rest in Peace, Mikey. I remember the good times we had in the 80's racing against each other in our "slalom" canoes. These were 16' Blue Holes paddled solo. Aaargh! Mikey was typically a few points ahead of me, except on one good day at the Cossatot races. I posted a better score than him ...

Re: Helton's Piney Access Notice

Yes Roger it was cold. So cold that I almost had to cut off some frozen straps after the shuttle. They were wet and frozen to the point that they wouldn't come loose. Actually it was a beautiful day on the creek otherwise. We didn't see anyone else.

Helton's Piney Access Notice

On Sunday Tommy Young and I launched two rafts at Helton's. We left our money in the can on the porch. We were surprised at the "No Trespassing" sign by the gate leading down to the field, but we went ahead down to the launch. The gate was not closed. When we got to the creek, we saw anoth...

Re: BNR Campground Closings

We visited Kyles yesterday and it appeared to be as usual for the winter season. The water was off as were the bathrooms that had flush toilets. There were people camping and there was no notice that the campground was closed. Walter

Re: Passing of a legend

The story was told of Mrs. Helton swimming Piney in flood to rescue livestock on the other side. She also related to me that those pastures at the farm were once planted totally in corn. You could fatten a lot of hogs with that much corn!
