The Buffalo is great - one of the most beautiful spots in Arkansas. Considering there are many outfitters along the river renting all sorts of boats to just about anyone you should be fine even if you have to go out with out local boaters along. stephanie

What program? Geosciences possibly? There are plenty of boaters around campus and elsewhere. There are two play spots less than an hour - Fishers Ford on the Illinois (close) and Whoop and Holler on the Mulberry (a little farther).
