Hailstone rescue

Post by Renee H » Mon Apr 25, 2011 8:58 am

I am posting this per Susan Wimberly:

Search & Rescue on the Hailstone

Anyone interested in participating in a search in rescue on the Hailstone today can contact the Newton County Sheriff’s office in Jasper.

A father and son put on the Hailstone Sunday about noon or 1 pm and have not reported in.

Tom just gave me a call and he is on his way over. It sounds like he has mustered some resources. I don't know any more details than that. Really hoping this turns out well. :?

Cudos to Tom and crew!
Hope the Father and son duo are just hiking out and not in peril. Cause it is getting hammered up there!

Shelby-I'll pass on the info when I talk to him next, which with spotty cell service and them running it, might be awhile. I know that he'd say THANK YOU for your willingness to help out, and if you haven't, to sign up for the call out list! I'll keep everyone posted as I hear news. Everyone can offer up some prayers/meditations/whatever your preference for the father/son and to keep our guys safe while they're searching!

Times like these I wish I was a better paddler. I actually have the day off for once too. But since my involvement would probably lead to another rescue situation, I'll sit here and offer up my prayers for the father and son, as well as everyone involved in trying to find and assist them. You folks make me proud to associate myself with the ACC. If I can help in any way that doesn't involve getting on the water in a kayak, don't hesitate to call. I"m in Marshall btw.

Wish I had the skills to help, but at least I can pray for safety and comfort of both the missing and our selfless rescue bunch.

I just wanted to add that for the water rescue resource database to work, of course we need only very strong paddlers going out on the water. And the specific water/event might dictate who is skilled enough to go: sometimes we might be needed on class II or III water; sometimes we might need only class IV confident boaters.

Having said that: ultimately we'll also need folks who can lend logistical support, too. SO, my request is that if you are a strong paddler and willing to help (not for today, but in the future) please contact Tom and give him your skill level/qualifications. Tom will coordinate then who could be included on a particular event depending on if higher skills are needed.

But if you are interested in helping support from a logistical stand point, whether that would be helping with a "phone tree" to contact everyone, or offering to drive shuttle so the paddlers don't have to worry about that, etc., then contact Tom to let him know that too.

And remember, just because your name is on the list doesn't obligate you for any particular event. Sometimes we just cannot get out of work or sometimes it will be something you may not want to volunteer for, or something may have happened on the complete other end of the state from where you are, but it's better to have your name and info on the list ahead of time.

At our last board meeting Tom announced that he hadn't received a lot of responses and worried there might not be enough volunteers to make this work. I REALLY hope that when we have our board meeting next weekend at WW School, that Tom will be able to announce that there IS enough interest and support! When you hear about something like a father/son not coming back on time from their trip, you realize how much we really want to be able to help in situations like this!

Thanks all

but you'll never catch me complaining about too much of that southern rain.
